I was a foot soldier beginning in 59' and the ripe old age of 8 and yes we met/knew many politicians, who would occasionally throw a bone our way. My Mom worked hard for her career with the state, which was more than most being liberal Chicago and fighting the Daley machine. My favorite was Everett Dirksen, my idol growing up, I clung to him like molasses. Mom was invited to innaugurations for Ogilvie, Nixon and many, knew Barry.
I carried the hard work for probably 30 years and it became increasingly harder for any clout in Chicago and then Illinois. Ryan saved my life in a sense. But it is not the same today -sigh-

Train derails near Summerfield

SUMMERFIELD - Thirteen cars of a 28-car freight train derailed Friday night, blocking traffic on County Road 42. One car that might have caused some concerns - a tanker carrying phosphoric acid - did not jump off the track.
The derailment occurred just before 9 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. 301 and CR 42, a mile-and-a-half north of the Sumter County line. There were no injuries. It is not clear what caused the derailment.
Phosphoric acid is used in the making of household cleaners and substances that can clean metal. It could burn skin if spilled, according to Heather Danenhower with Marion County Fire-Rescue. However, it was in powder form. It needs to be mixed with water to be used as a cleaner.
Cherie Skidmore, who works at a Shell station near the site, was outside changing the plastic liners in trash cans when she heard a noise and saw sparks flying. Then, she said, she watched as the train started to roll over.
She ran to the door of the station, yanked open the door and yelled, "Call 911!"

The CSX train was headed south from Jacksonville to Tampa, with engineer David English, of Lake City, and conductor J.J. Spivey of Waycross, Ga., on board. The crew reported feeling an unusual tugging sensation at the rear of the train just before the derailment.

The radiation source - the nuclear material itself - doesn't need maintenance.
The circuitry needed to detonate a weapon does need maintenance and is pretty fragile.
The tritium used to boost the yield of a fission weapon, and which is involved in the fusion reaction process, does decay fairly quickly but that isn't radioactive.
The radiological source (Uranium or Plutonium) in a lost or abandonned nuke, could be re-used in a dirty bomb. If whoever came into possession of the source had the technical know-how, and certain tools and machinery, it could be recycled into another nuclear weapon, a la "Sum of All Fears".
The tough part about building a nuke is getting hold of the fissionable nuclear material, which is supposedly tightly controlled.

Although the dust is unlikely to have a direct effect on Earth, it is expected to chip larger particles off asteroids, say the researchers.
This will increase the amount of dust swirling around the Solar System, which can damage the solar panels of spacecraft.
It may also raise the number of random meteors that can be seen from Earth streaking across the sky.
The dust grains are very fine, measuring just 100th of the width of a human hair.
Astronomers want to know how much of the dust in the Solar System is shed by comets and asteroids, and how much comes directly from interstellar space.

FEARS of al-Qaeda terrorist attacks have led the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) to issue new advice for Australians travelling to the United States.
US officials this week said they had intelligence that the al-Qaeda terrorist network might be planning big attacks in the US or against US interests in the next few months.
A DFAT travel advisory today urged Australians in the US to monitor local news broadcasts and to follow the advice of local authorities.
"United States authorities have stated that attacks are possible over the coming United States summer months and could be aimed at large political and international events," the DFAT advisory said.
"Before and during your trip, monitor local developments and news broadcasts carefully, and follow the advice of local authorities."
