Apocalypse Soon? by Patrick J. Michaels

This article originally appeared in the Washington Post on May 16, 2004.

Pat Michaels is senior fellow in environmental studies at the Cato Institute and author of the upcoming book "Meltdown: The Predictable Exaggeration of Global Warming by Scientists, Politicians, and the Media" (Cato Books).

On March 13, the Guardian newspaper of London, beating the American networks by nearly eight months, called the U.S. presidential election -- for Sen. John F. Kerry. The Democrat would win, the paper declared, not because of his plan for Iraq, or his proposals for the economy, but because of . . . a movie.

Specifically, a movie about global warming. It's called "The Day After Tomorrow." And if it doesn't actually unseat George Bush, it won't be for lack of trying. It opens on May 28, but this movie is already being vocally touted by none other than former vice president Al Gore, on behalf of MoveOn.org, a liberal Internet advocacy group backed in part by billionaire George Soros that appears to be dedicated to defeating Bush.

Scientific THEORIES about global warming are guaranteed to be controversial when they enter the realm of public discussion and debate. The accusations fly back and forth - which rich corporations are paying you how much to tell lies? But that goes both ways. Who is undertaking the more responsible and sensible scientific research?

Make no mistake. Junk science rules! I wonder if any Move On activists and their cohorts and consorts will be trolling about theater lobbies trying to hand out their pseudo-scientific and political literature.

...Mike McConnell, talk show host of "The weekend", devoted the whole show to this topic. Certainly an interesting debate. Religion and politics, combined. Pull me up a chair...

This movie is too stupid to have any political effect. It's like the giant ant movies of the 50s. We didn't throw out the President or declare war on ants.

Wow, when I saw Apocalypse Soon heading this news bite, for a split second time froze. My heart started pumping faster, adrenaline flowed like a river while my eyes were bulging in one expectant recognition which never came.

Alas, it was not my Apocalypse Soon.

Maybe next time!

Reaserch is a concern....the Emmissions Global warming group does dominate the landscape.
Other sciences..with technicals which really connect better to global warming are sitting..twidling thumbs...their info not being taken seriously.

The Sun has been throwing of Plasma in great volumes in the past decade...and done so out of sequence with peak Sun spot cycles...some of the large Plasma discharges occured when Sun spot activity was low.

We have also had many comets appear in the last decade.

Comets are Negative in charge...and draw Electrical interface from the Sun via *Quantum jump.

Jupiter and Saturn discharge walloping Electrical current values...5 Million ampheres and upward.
Comets begin to *Light up as they pass Saturn and Jupiter...they experience Electrical interface..Quantum jump from these 2 gas Giants....then the interface becomes more pronounced with the Sun as Perihelion approaches.
SOHO has captured the Sun errupting in Plasma discharges as comets near perihelion...repeated bursts..reaching out to .0999 AU...the same distance the Earth is at.

Just in the past 3 months..and even weeks..we have had 2 comets approaching Hyperbolic and recieving large Plasma bursts from the Sun captured by SOHO.

The planets of the inner solar system are effected by all this *dumping/interface activity.
Ion flow..protons..free electrons are drawn into a planets atmosphere..and make their way down to its surface..and in the Earths case..into the inner magneto dynamo system in the core.

Science is seeing a connection with High pressure cells and the earths inner magnetic cycling.
what has been evident this year..is that High pressure cells have remained strong..and held station longer.
the result has been storm periods ..some sudden with over the top wind speeds..and altitude varience..which has been knocking bricked buildings about easily.

Have these 2 comets and their perilelion passage been partly responsible for the record breaking storms we are experiencing this year?

I think so..
still..it be years for science to correlate all this.

As gullible as the masses are, and they certainly are, even they're not so thick as to watch this movie and get in a panic or even a mild state of concern. The science of the movie is patently ridiculous, and it's glaringly evident to everyone watching, unless they walked in as a left-wing environmentalist wacko.

The effects and scale make this movie worth watching, but there's no more chance of it swaying public opinion than Roland Emmerich's last big movie, INDEPENDENCE DAY. In fact, they went so far overboard on the political angle as to reduce credibility even further IMO.

One more thing: DAT could've been a GREAT disaster movie if they'd concentrated as much energy on plot and character development as they did on politics. I suspect they'll get the message when all is said and done, too. I don't expect it to lose money, but I do predict it will fall FAR short of expectations, given the fact that they've hyped it for six months.

And hey, maybe next week would be a good time to launch some queries for my own huge disaster screenplay. :-)

It's funny how liberals always fail to mention the previous ice age/global warming event of 10,000-15,000 years ago. Man could not have had any influence on the climate then. I guess the fact of that the earth has natural cycles regardless of man's impact derails their agenda.

I heard the German director of this dreck on NPR. (Okay, I was flipping channels in my car, and happened to catch it.) In the interview, it became obvious he's an America-hating Michael Moore fan, a total euro "watermelon." He brags about the overt political message of the movie.

Earth was 4 degrees warmer in the 1th century. When the earth gets colder, does that make it warmer?

Liberals are messed ..are'nt they : )

Trust them to spin natural or nominal difficulty into a crisis...like conjuring witches.

I call them..*The Village Idiot party....cuz it takes a village......just like Emperor Clintonius's concubine Hillary says : )

I'm waiting for the next great liberal disaster movie, The Day After Election Day, when clouds of gloom settle over the Democrat Party and sweep it away...

It's even more funny when you consider theories concerning how the dinosaurs went extinct. There are several interesting ones. For example, my favorite one is this: Plant life was changing, so the herbivore dinosaurs became constipated as they tried to adapt to the new diet. They could only pass gas, and that warmed up the atmosphere considerably. Along with the poisonous gases that the more active volcanoes of that time were spewing out, they suffocated to death.
