On April 29, 2004, as a service and tribute to members of the World War II Generation, the National World War II Memorial opened for public viewing, exactly one month prior to the formal Dedication Ceremony taking place May 29, 2004. The World War II Memorial is the first national memorial dedicated to all who served during the Second World War. The memorial, established by the American Battle Monuments Commission, honors all military veterans of the war, the citizens on the home front, the nation at large, and the high moral purpose and idealism that motivated the nation's call to arms. The Second World War is the only 20th-century event commemorated on the Mall's central axis.
(from www.wwiimemorial.com)

Don't forget that you can watch the dedication today!! God Bless all of our Veterans & Active Duty!!!

They walk along the granite block,
past names all etched in stone.
Among so many others here,
but feel so all alone.
So many here to touch a soul,
that passed so long ago.
And tears now streak from off your cheek,
emotions, have to show.
There are so many people here,
who wish the pain to end.
Why not reach out a hand to them,
to listen, be a friend.
The Wall can bridge the largest gap,
it made our nation one.
We thank the nurses one and all,
and every soldier, son.
Whose names we see forever etched,
upon the granite stone.
Though painful make us realize,
that we are not alone.
The sacrifice, that you all made,
that bring us to this shrine.
Bring all those closer, left behind,
perhaps the grand design.
To help the friends and family,
to understand the call.
That took your names from off lifes list,
and place it on this Wall.
You fought a war, unpopular,
in Nam so far away.
And now you’ve found the greatest peace,
as we stand here and pray.
Beyond the Wall we hope to find,
the reason for it all.
Why you with pride went far away,
to answer duty’s call.
Perhaps the flag that others burn,
became your symbol proud.
Why you gave life, proclaim your love,
of country, very loud.
So rest in peace, my Warrior,
my nurse and doctor too.
And rest assured forever more,
we’ll all remember you.
The Wall means much to everyone,
these names on granite cast.
To keep your memories alive,
as long as time will last.
So look upon the granite face,
and touch the names with pride.
For all their spirits linger there,
beyond the Wall, inside.

Memorial Day Tribute
Memorial Day is a U.S. holiday originally held in commemoration
of soldiers killed in the Civil War (1868). Its observance
later extended to all U.S. war dead. Most states observe
the holiday on the last Monday in May, but some retain
the traditional day of celebration, May 30.
National observance is marked by the placing
of a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknowns
in Arlington National Cemetery.
Freedom isn't free
I watched the flag pass by one day.
It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it,
And then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil?
How many mothers' tears?
How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.
I heard the sound of taps one night,
When everything was still
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That taps had meant "Amen,"
When a flag had draped a coffin
Of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free.

Hey, Ms. B! How's everybody?

I spent the night watching "Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King" with some wine and a picture of my son on the 'puter screen.

Let's just say, I shed a few tears.

Ms. B, over the past week, I've worked my tail off, and have been called "an enemy from within" here on FR. Right now, I miss my son and wife. Terribly.

Thanks, Ms. B, but I wouldn't be great company right now.

Sometimes, the whole situation just HITS, you know? I was watching the movie toight, all bundled up (the barracks heat is off) and in some scenes, I thought of Short Cut...and I lost it.

Listen, Kiddo...
Do you think I am ALWAYS such a little ray of sunshine?
(yeah, right!)
We were meant to help one another, through good times and bad..
life isn't always peachy-keen-neato...
Most of the time,it's hard, it's not fair, and it's lonely..
I really think that we cross paths for a reason..
Long Cut..you give so much of yourself for us...
You work in dangerous conditions everyday...
I want to help you, too...by being a friend...
I don't care if ya wanna be a wet blanket..
I'll just hang ya on the clothesline!!
Maybe you have helped me to, ya think?
I sure do!!!!
You ROCK!!
Whenever you are up to it...you know where we are...

Hi Long Cut,

So? You ain't good company tonight, eh?

Well, that's okay. I'm not either. I've got a tummy ache, my ghetto neighbors are being obnoxious, and my little one has now officially come down stairs for the 20th time asking if we've seen the dog. Isn't it interesting that he has to pass her couch to ask us.

I figure that when life hands you a bunch of lemons---Screw making lemonade. Just through the damn batch back.

You may not be great company, but that's okay. You don't have to do anything. We can do it for you. That's the great thing about this place. Very little is required to be there for someone.

I know it's hard to be away from the Missus and your beautiful baby boy. They will soon be reunited with you. Then you will have no need for such dysfunctional people in the Canteen. We will always be here. Don't forget it.

I really do love making plans with other human beings. NOT! It's a great source of comfort that they are never able to do things just the way you do. That's why God brought them into your life. You are with the program. Most everyone else is not. Besides, most people aren't nearly as entertaining anyways.

*HUGS*

Heads High Sailor!!
