Stephen Ambrose was a lot more fair to Sobel in the book than I would've been.
He claims that Sobel's discipline was a factor in Easy's performance on the battlefield. I personally disagree.
Besides Winters, my favorite is ole' Shifty Powers.
Ambrose's work is my only knowledge of Sobel and his behavior, so I do not consider myself equipped to offer an opinion as to that question.
I have a signed photo of Maj. Winters in my computer room....i send him a Christmas card every year...one GREAT American!!!!!!!!!!!!
Odd, though, when Easy Company is getting word about the Ardennes offensive, they are getting details from a young corporal (IIRC) who drives up in a jeep with ammo supplies. The actor playing him: Jimmy Fallon, from SNL.
What about Capt. Spears? My 14 year old son is doing Spears' biography for school for a 'pick a hero' theme project.
How many Winters' and Spears' are out there that we've never heard of? Whenever we see Old Glory, we should think of them.
My vote goes to Bill Guarnere....
He was the marksman, right? A sniper type?
IIRC, everybody from easy company all HATED Sobel, but most grudgingly acknowledged that he got them ready for combat by being such a jerk and insisting on top physical conditioning.
Very strange that Sobel was even considered for a captaincy in the Airborne. OTOH, the 101st was a new unit.
Be Seeing You,
