In `learn or die' fight, gallant unit saves GIs (Amazing account of American Bravery)
Chicago Tribune ^ | Fri, May 28, 2004 | By Bill Glauber Tribune staff reporter

Moore leapt from his tank and sprinted down the alley to the men.

"They had expended all their ammo," Moore said. "These guys fought like tigers. The platoon leader was wounded in the head and left leg, and he was still commanding. When I got down there they had guys who were crying. I don't know if they were tears of joy. They fought like wonderful men."

Moore and his men had to fight to get the unit out.

The dead patrol soldier was laid gently on a tank turret along with the wounded.

"While everyone else was fighting, time stopped," Dean said, still amazed by the image of American soldiers caring for a fallen comrade.

Thanks for the post. It's about time from the liberal news media. Oh, and I'm not surprised. This is a genuine story of American bravery. A tradition handed down now for well over two hundred years.

Great post!

Spec. Micheaux Sanders, 20, of Goldsboro, N.C., took a bullet through his left shoulder on the second rescue attempt, refused to leave the battle and hopped on another tank for the third rescue attempt. He fought from the rear of a tank, shooting every weapon he had. Sanders saved the lives of several soldiers that day, his comrades said.

.

Bump!
Great story!

[Snippet about Sadr's militia]

"They have gotten better, but we have gotten better at a faster rate," Zehtab said before Thursday's truce. "We're professional soldiers, not guys off the street."

Zehtab said he believes al-Mahdi fighters are driven by a David versus Goliath attitude and a belief that God is on their side. But "it hasn't worked out that way for them," he said.

"All I needed was a Band-Aid," Sanders said later with a laugh.

LOL!!! A direct slap to Crazy Kerry don’t you think?

What a wonderful article. Thank you for sharing.

Great post! We need to see more stories like this on every evening news broadcast. This is the America that I know, not the prison crap the media constantly regurgitates.

Before we went into Iraq, the "experts" were on the talking head programs telling us how our troops didn't know how to fight an urban war. And if we did ever get into a street fight, it would be "Blackhawk Down" on a major scale. Wait until the body bags start filling up was the dire prediction. BS! Did any of their predictions come true?

No matter where we fight, we will win if given the ok to do so. We learn fast and take out the enemy faster.

"The rap against tanks is they're heavy and hard to get to a battle spot and that lighter, faster vehicles can get the job done as well as tanks can," Moore said. "That isn't true. We need the firepower of the tank, and without the protection of the tank, our crews would be getting killed."

This little comment is probably one of the most important of the entire war, IMHO.

The basic question is: can you improve urban performance by making a tank that is small and fast enough, but still well-armed and armored?

The answer is undoubtedly "yes," and I think we'll be hearing about it in a couple of years.

He couldn't possibly be that brave -- Kerry got his in Vietnam, you know....

I ask myself this all the time.

I have been reading military history since I was 13 years old. In every culture in every time, there are men (not all)who comprehend honor, duty, sacrifice, courage... In America, we are fortunate because we don't send young men to service with just their courage. They have lots of, and the best equipment, training and leadership. With all this, and once they gain experience, the are a match for... and in reality, better than most anywhere. But even when, as the article demonstrates, they run out of everything else...even with lost or wounded leaders, they continue... on their courage alone.

Great great men, great soldiers. "If you want good soldiers, you make good citizens." They are the best and more than some 'Americans' at home have done anything to deserve. (List of names available)
