Medical Marijuana OK, Says Texas Medical Association

Medical Marijuana OK, Says Texas Medical Association

On May 14, during its annual state convention, the Texas Medical Association unanimously - and without discussion - adopted a new policy recommendation supporting the right of doctors and patients to discuss medical marijuana as a viable treatment option, without fear of recrimination by authorities. The TMA delegates also reaffirmed the association's call for further research on medicinal marijuana, "including well-controlled studies in patients who have serious pain-related conditions," according to the report of the TMA's Council on Scientific Affairs, which was approved by the TMA delegates. "Paramount is support for physicians to discuss with patients any treatment option available and to do so without recrimination for the physician and/or patient."

Noelle Davis, executive director of the fledgling group Texans for Medical Marijuana, was thrilled. "The most important thing is that they acknowledge that marijuana is a viable treatment option," she said. "This is most important because the federal government says that medical marijuana is a cruel hoax. So when this body passes [this recommendation] without a peep, that tells me it is a viable option."

The quickly adopted policy recommendation wasn't really a surprise, says TMA spokesman Brent Annear, because doctors "vehemently" protect their right to discuss any topic of importance to their patients. "It's really a patient's free speech issue," he said. Still, approval by the nearly 40,000 member group - the country's largest and, arguably, most powerful state medical association - could be politically potent ammunition for TMM as it pushes for the passage of a state law protecting medical marijuana patients. "This is absolutely a step in the right direction," Davis said.

I don't know how I feel about this. I do know 20 years ago my Mother-in-law fought a tough fight with colon cancer. During the last months she was given marijuana along with many other drugs. She was a strong Christian and we were all certainly against drugs but it helped her a lot and we have never regretted the good Dr in Oklahoma City who gave it to her and made her last months at least decent. I don't recall that there was any question about giving it then.

"It's really a patient's free speech issue," he said.

No, it's a who-owns-your-body issue.

I just don't understand why the government gets it's collective panties in such a wad over ingestion a freakin' PLANT that was here long before this country came into existience.

But if you want to murder a helpless unborn baby... Well, THAT"S OK!

Talk about screwed up priorities!

Who said that? Many medicines have harmful side effects; should they all be banned?

Then why don't you know how you feel about this? Don't other suffering people deserve legal access to the same options your mother-in-law had?

What a great argument.
However, that was not one of the reasons it was 'criminalized'.

And I take it from your stance that tobacco growers should have all of their possessions taken, as well as 'dealers' of that demon weed.

I'm sure the woddies won't find anything wrong with this, as long as the good doctors limit themselves to discussing why you shouldn't use it, and the researchers don't publish anything positive about it.

There's nothing wrong with using THC for medical purposes. It doesn't have to be delivered by smoking. Drug companies could make a THC inhaler or patches.

I don't smoke pot, but it wouldn't bother me in the least if medical marijuana was approved in Texas. In fact, I wouldn't care if it were legalized for adult recreational use, although the same restrictions as alcohol for driving while impaired, etc., ought to apply.

As it is, pot is big bucks in the underground economy, and we spend far too much money fighting it and in the judicial and prison systems. It's just not that evil of a drug to justify this. Alcohol is far more deadly and dangerous to our health.

I don't think all substances have the right physical properties to be dispensed via inhaler.

or patches.

Those have a slower onset, which in turn makes it more difficult to adjust the dosage to the current level of symptoms.
