ALTHOUGH just 19, Alexia Regner has vowed to serve her country to the death, if needed. As thanks, the baby-faced young lady with the quick intelligence and military bearing has had verbal bombs thrown in her face by her fellow college students. Even faculty members have subjected her to abuse."I've been called a baby killer," said Alexia, who's enrolled in the Reserve Officers Training Corps.
With her crisp, white uniform and sad eyes, Alexia was one of thousands of sailors and soon-to-be soldiers who descended upon the city for Fleet Week. And although she didn't sign up for this extra duty, the girl from Wisconsin found herself drafted as a kind of emissary forced into offering proof that, 30 years after Vietnam, our soldiers are not baby killers, sadists or monsters.
They're our children. And our lives may depend on them.

This young sailor has more courage and class then her critics every will.
We are truly lost if those that hear "baby-killer" directed at a service member do not violently react. I will go to jail on a charge of assault if it is heard in my presence. Our military should not have to fight both here and there.
Ah yes..the "intellectual" class. What a bunch of worthless, cowardly morons. We need a much more active propoganda machine for this war on terror...people like this need to be called out. How about this: One Republican Congressman or Senator (plus Zell Miller, of course) each day, should have a press conference listing situations like this. Constituents would probably flood their email boxes with examples.
The media would whine and cry "witch hunt" (when don't they); as would the usual suspects.
But, the alternative media would cover it; and it would sure be great to have a "list." Regular Americans would love it; and probably have their eyes opened. Hey, free speech cuts both ways...let's use it!
The day another student lobbed that slur at Alexia, she decided to keep quiet.
Time to take the cuffs off the military they should not have to put up with that and the law should protect their retaliation however swift and brutal it may be. Insulting a soldier who protects ones freedom should be a very very dangerous thing to do.
I completely agree. The professor should be treated just as if he called a black student a n----r and said, "You must be too busy playing basketball to get your work done."
The reaction would not only cost the professor his job, but also haunt his career. It should be equally bad or worse for a professor to say slurs and cracks to a member of the military.
Just ask the a$$holes how they feel about abortion.
these people deserve to live under islam,
I just worry about the rest of us
Some teachers today could hardly be classsified as "intellectual elites." Many are young, inexperienced in life, and devoid of perspicacity.
She is called a "baby killer" by the same party that actually does kill babies and brags about it. She should turn around and ask them how many abortions they have had or do they support people who do. She should also ask them if they support John Kerry who admitted that he killed women and children in Vietnam.
It is one thing for college students with few surviving brain cells to talk like idiots. Teachers, professors, adults in positions of responsiblity should be held to a higher standard.
Most of these "persons" have never left school, and so have never grown up.
Cont'd
The day another student lobbed that slur at Alexia, she decided to keep quiet.
"I was thinking, I took an oath to defend their right to call me that. I was pissed. I would never kill a baby," she said. "But I didn't say anything. If I did, they'd just say, 'Oh, another mean military person.' "
Alexia's pal Kristin Sinosky, 20, is enrolled in the ROTC at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. She's an architecture major.
But when she sits in the classroom, her professors don't see her. Many just see the white of the uniform she must wear to class. And for that, they despise her.
"My teachers make cracks," Kristin told me. "They say, 'You must be too busy marching to get your work done.' "
I met these girls unexpectedly yesterday at the USO station set up at the Port Authority Bus Terminal, where sailors have been giving interviews and sending messages home as part of a living-history project sponsored by Our Living Tree. But these girls opened up off-camera, so grateful were they to be seen as individuals with aspirations. And honor.
Being in New York, a place where diversity of opinion may flourish, was a welcome relief.
"People stop you on the street and say, 'Thank you,' " said Alexia.
Thanks, ladies.
Liberals think harassing the military is being patriotic.
But don't you know, they support the troops, just not the war? (/sarcasm)
Giving them WAYYYY too much credit there!
I heard this crap back during Vietnam and I am Gawd Dammed Sick of it.
Heaven help some liberal whacko who says it in my front of this old Texan.
One of us is going to the hospital and with The Good Lord's help it won't be me.
I predicted a while back that liberals would be spitting on Vets returning from Iraq. With the media you just have to realize that they are replaying Viet Nam.
