PROTECTING AMERICA FROM TERRORIST ATTACKS: Please BOLO For Us
Federal Bureau of Investigations ^ | May 26, 2004 | FBI

"BOLO"--that's BuSpeak for "Be On the Look Out."

On May 26, Director Mueller and Attorney General Ashcroft held a press conference to call renewed attention to 7 individuals we believe pose a real and present danger to U.S. interests around the world--perhaps most especially this summer and fall, a time of high profile public events that may well serve as a lightening rod to terrorist attacks.

Director Mueller spoke frankly about the heightened threat to U.S. interests during these months, and equally frankly about strong FBI efforts to prevent attacks. "This summer and fall our nation will celebrate a number of events that serve as powerful symbols of our free and democratic society." he said. "Unfortunately, the same events that fill most of us with hope and pride are seen by terrorists as prime vehicles for sowing fear and chaos."

"We need the support of the American people," he said. First to cooperate when called upon, as agents will be reaching out to many across the nation to help gather information and intelligence. Second, to be aware of your surroundings and report anything suspicious. Third, to "BOLO" for those pictured above. In Director Mueller's words: "Have you seen them in your communities? Have you heard that someone might be helping them to hide? Do you have any idea where they might be? If so, we need you to come forward."

The FBI today released photos of suspected terrorists believed to be in the United State now.

To assist the FBI, I have offered a suggestion via phone and email, and ask that members of Free Republic help. The suggestion:

"This is an advisory suggestion.

Photos of suspected terrorists should immediately be posted at every mass transit point, airline ticket counters, bus and train terminals, and city subway system. Photos should also be posted at all major shopping malls, large public events, tourist destinations, highway rest areas, and truck stops/service stations along major highways.

Billboards in heavily trafficked areas should also be considered."

Current FBI practice is to have photos distributed to local Post Offices for posting, and distribute the photos to media outlets. We need these photos posted at potential targets. We need to involve the eyes of the public as much as possible.

Free Republic members can help. Visit the FBI site and print copies of each suspects information. Clicking on the individual photos of each suspect will produce a complete poster type composite. Carry these with you, and if possible, make copies to post in heavily trafficed, or targeted areas.

This isn't as much with helping the FBI as it is with helping ourselves.

It'll get the site's search engine rank up with those keywords. ...will attract news hounds.

...funny. In the Army, a "bolo" is one who fails a range qualification.

;-)

It might help if the government made people feel more secure about reporting suspicious people.

I discovered some information about a person that I thought the Homeland Defense office should know about, but I was afraid of the complications of getting involved, so I kept quite for several months until a terrorist group from his ethnic group made a specific threat against the U.S.

My conscious overcame my fear of retribution, government interrogations, investigations etc...

I tried for hours to find the terrorists hotline number (I thought FR had it on the home page.)but gave up. It's not in the telephone book, google was useless, and government info operators didn't know what I was talking about.

I drove across town to a pay phone with easy escape routes and called the FBI to ask for the terrorists hotline number.

No automated phone system. A live operator answered on the first ring. Before I could even finish asking her for the terrorist hotline number another voice came on identifying herself as the duty officer and wanted to know what information I had.

Unfortunately, after briefly stating the facts, the first thing she wanted to know was my name. I refused to give it. She then proceeded to ask me specific questions about the individual which were suggestive and leading.

Interestingly enough, she wanted the individual's address and land line telephone number, but wasn't interested in his three cell phone numbers.

The next day an alert was issued for area involved.

It's been more than a month now and no FBI agents have knocked on my door so I guess I'm safe. But there may be many more people like me who haven't given info because of distrust of our own government.

The FBI can't connect the dots unless they have dots to connect, and citizens are afraid to get involved when all they have to contribute is one dot of a big picture. Remember what happened to the security guard in Atlanta who found the bomb at the Olympics?

Thanks for your help. Hopefully, the civilian population can give the acronym BOLO a very successful meaning.

I am overly concerned present photo distribution practices by the FBI rely on the ability of the public to memorize the images of potential terrorists. The photos need to be present everywhere considered a target so the terrorists likenesses are etched into the minds of every citizen. Make their images so well known that their very presence in public would discomfort them.

Our best defense is us, not the government. We've more eyes, more ears, and more determination.

As an example: The FBI informed me these photos are available BEHIND airline ticketing counters. They need to be posted at every entry point, every airport parking lot, and every drop-off point so everyone visiting an airport for any reason can see them. By the time an airline employee or security personnel make identification, it may already be too late.

The government, specifically the FBI, needs to involve the public to a greater extent to get positive results.

Before 9/11, I had already reported quite a few cells from Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee & Mississippi.

This "war" inside our own borders has been going on since at least the mid 1980's.

The threat is real - the enemy is here. Not all are "mid-eastern" either.

Amen! She and the media whom I believe are working for her are the most dangerous force in this country today.

Thanks for your support in this effort.

There is something larger at stake in this effort. Citizens have within their grasp, the opportunity to prove citizens, not the government is the ultimate defensive force in our nation. This is an opportunity for citizens to reclaim a heritage that believed it was not what the government provided for them, it was what they could provide for themselves.

The "War on Terrorism" will be won. If the government without citizen assistance wins the war, at home, it will further enhance the belief the government exists to provide all our needs. If the war is won by citizens, or with the overwhelming active assistance of citizens, it can help reestablish individual responsibility within our nation.

Like the call to arms among our forgotten militias of days passed, this is a call for citizens to protect our great nation by getting involved to thwart terrorist efforts within our borders. Together, we've greater numbers then the government. Together we can have greater effect then the government. Together we can help put the government back in its rightful place as servant to the people, and win the "War on Terrorism" here at home.
