Hey, it wasn't Clancy's fault that the USSR collapsed....I always thought that his best book was the one novel NOT in the Ryan chronology..Red Storm Rising...and can I remind you that the opening of that novel, the fundamentalist Islamic attack on the Soviet petrochemical lant, was written, what, 20 years+ before the current unpleasantries...I wish the guy woudl pick my LOTTO numbers..

While it would certainly cause major mayhem, my belief is that it will inflame the rest of the country that has gone back to sleep.
It's unbelievable that just 2-1/2 years after 911, we'd be at this point.

That being said, I have a strong suspicion that there is a huge amount going on behind the curtain here. These guys aren't typically this nervous, and this "chatter" is extremely important diagnostically. I suspect they have far more than we know.
I can tell you from personal experience, the intel you and I can NOT be told is far more extensive than most people can believe. I KNOW how scared I was sometimes with the information I had. Those in the know can't help but be afraid for this country at times.

I met some woman this weekend at a party - educated, early 40s, two children, some $$$s - who did not know what the letters "DC" stood for in Washington DC.
This is what we are up against in this country, why the media is able to easily sway so many people.
I noticed that since the media broke this story, and Ashcroft put together a quickie press conference, (he sounded a little nervous), that they had to say something.......but they aren't telling us everything.

But the DemocRATS trying to make this into something political makes me madder then this new terror alert! They just won't quit.

on C-Span this morning. I knew
she thinks Iraqi Intel was part
of both WTC attacks('93 & '01),
but only now do I learn who she
thinks al-Qaida is. A single
family(other than bin Laden) of
Sunni extremists from a Clan in
eastern Iran who helped Saddam
against the Iranians in their
war; 'course they move about &
live here & there. They obtained
false identities in Kuwait while
Saddam held it. So who we say
they are isn't who they really
are.
She said Bush won't make the case
of al-Qaida + Iraqi Intel = terror
because he knows the CIA & State
Dept. will undercut the case, much
less back him up.
Why won't they come clean? She
says admin. after admin. have such
intel failures to cover; both Dems
& Repubs, careerists, etc. Even
the Media who "dig out" the news,
such as the NYT & WP. Now none of
them want this to show up their
FAILURE.
She likes Bush's WOT, but she is
appalled that he can't tell us
unambiguously WHO the top players
are, & their Iraq connection.

Mylorie is excellent. and I believe she is correct about the "dug in" careerists at State and CIA.
I don't know if "avoiding mass panic" is the reason, and I'm sure if they had any decent reason they would raise the "threat level". I don't think that for most of us there's anything to do if that level is at 3 or lower; higher, and there may be. For the most part, though, I think it is simply that there is precious little that would be accomplished by releasing the intel they have, and that it could easily be counter productive. It does not serve us well to put the terrorists on notice exactly what we know.
We knew very precisely where the Soviet subs were, and for the most part they knew we knew. It wasn't very useful for the military to tell you they had approached to 200 miles away from Washington, or that we had scrambled planes that day to intercept Soviet bombers incoming. What could you have done anyway? In addition, the Soviets would have been far more certain about how much we knew if we did tell you.
The same is true today about much of the intel we have about the terrorists, I suspect. When they get a picture, or a specific methodology that can be defended against if Americans have that information, they'll give it. And NOW, we actually have a lead agency to put out that info, rather than a hodgepodge of people who don't really know where they stand in the "public warning" responsibility.
I don't think that she is correct about the motivations for not disclosing this info, but the remainder is probably very accurate.
In this world-wide and very long-term chess game, the obvious moves are certainly often counter-productive. As good as she is, she is only one person and has only one point of view, and she does not have the resources and capabilities of "war-gaming" these things as well as corridors of people who study these things for a living working together.
That being said, I sympathize with her wishing that some things would be disclosed - but I don't know whether that would affect things already being done, and neither does she.

I have no doubt what you say is true. The fact that Ashcroft and Mueller released photos of seven individuals is a strong indicator that this threat is more specific and serious than what has become "the norm" in the post-9/11 era. I'm sure they don't know the where and when, but they do know a lot more than they can tell us.
One extremely serious danger we face is that most of the media and even some local law enforcement agencies give the public a false sense of security. The media goes out of its way to imply that the President has a political reason for releasing this information "because his poll numbers have slipped." The media also subtly implies that this is all nonsense and the public shouldn't take such warnings seriously.
One thing I do wish the administration had considered early on is to reinstitute the Civil Defense Corps — in part to take at least some burden off local authorities, and in part to help counter media negativity by giving an outlet to civilians who want to participate in the defense of our country.
Watch for LOTS of college-age (and younger) kids converting to Islam -- now that it has been imbued with the halo of the 'noble victim.' I am already seeing it. Kids fall for 'fads,' no matter how life-threatening they may be, just to be hip'n'cool.
