Yes, they can be a little noisy. We were firing one off at a friend's house one evening and a "concerned neighbor" called the police.

Mine didn't make much of a sound. It made a very low THUMP sound. Of course I used hair spray as a propellent. I drilled a small hole in the combustion chamber and inserted an oven lighter. The lighter was just a flint that sparked when you twisted a knob. The overall length of the gun was about 5 feet but the damn then shot a hole in the barn. :/
