Everyone keeps talking about McCain on the Democrat ticket. What if Bush tapped him as VP?
Think it is not possible?
McCain is pro-life, which fills the biggest concern for most Conservatives. (He trumps other popular names such as Powell, Ridge, Guliani, and Rice -- all of whom are pro-choice).
He brings military credibility, and a no nonsense approach that, while not popoular, is authentic.
More importantly, he is currently being lauded by democrats. In fact, Hillary is talking about supporting him on the Kerry ticket. Naming him now, puts dems in a very uncomfortable position, as they have all been building him up.
You think Bush wopn't do it? He will do and must do whatever he has to to get elected. McCain brings cross-over dems and moderates. He also is very atrtractive to independents. Bush would do it, particularly if Cheney says it is the best move.
You think McCain won't do it. Get serious. The man wants to be President. He ets to play white night in saving this administration. He gets the seat as heir apparent to the '08 nomination, and, in two years, he will be out of the House and campaigning. In essence, it would be a two yaer gig for him, where he will have real say and real independence. This is his last and best chance to be President.
I love Cheney. But he is almost certainly going to go to try to improve this ticket. In addition, he has no '08 future. The party must have an '08 advantage, and he has always known that.
Right now, Mccain is the best pick for all of these political reasons.
If the job was open I would pick Zell Miller. That would tick off the liberals and Miller (prolife) might bite. I like cheney though.
Let's see. This is what...the 4th thread today on the topic of Dick Cheney stepping down as vice president?
Discussing this possibility is EXACTLY what the Dims WANT us to do. They put up a rumor or trial balloon and people just reach up and grab it without thinking. You may think you are being clever and taking away their supposed potential V.P. dual-party nominee, but what you are actually doing is dissing President Bush, BIG TIME. You say "I love Cheney, but..." The Dims know this is a weak spot and will use it. They want to divide and conquer because they can't win any other way.
"Any thoughts?" Yes: start supporting the fine man who is already on the ticket for 2004, Vice President Dick Cheney, and cut out the dream team speculation.
And John Kerry will put Al Gore on the ticket, oops, better not give him any ideas.
Right now, this is the only thing I can think of that would make me stay home on Election Day.
Becki
BINGO! I'd venture to say that McCain's ego is VERY intense....& he loves controversy. I say this theory is plausable......probably won't happen, but it COULD!
Go ahead and pick McCain.... and kiss the conservative support goodbye.
My only contention was that I think it's useless speculation as President Bush has said all along that Cheney is the man.... thus unless something changes to reverse that then nothing is going to happen. My guess is that if Cheney feels he's a drag or his health becomes an issue for him then he'll be on the ticket. I personally don't think people vote for a ticket based upon the VP all that much. Maybe a state would support a candidate of their own whereby they may not if he were from some other state....
It's about three months to the convention so yes it could change but so far nothing has came out of the White House indicating anything different.
And I'm not so sure McCain still qualifies as a Republican.
Cheney is the reason many of us felt comfortable voting for Bush in 2000...he is a temperate and stabilizing force behind the throne, he isn't an egomaniac but a true patriot who has served his country for what, 3 decades? I still trust him, and the only way I would accept his leaving the ticket is if his health was obviously an issue. Then, I would replace him with...
Colin Powell!!!!
And make Cheney Sec of State
After raising taxes, pulling troops and appointing Hillary, KERRY will also do some intelligent things for our country.
"NO and HELL NO!"
Took the word right out of my rectum!
Rudolph Guiliani would be my choice.
The not so funny aspect of all of this...there was another thread earlier today where one of pat buchanan's old supporters was exclaiming how the President SHOULD raise import duties on incoming oil.
Sorry, but I think you'll find that Powell is going into retirement quite soon.
My sense is that if Cheney leaves that he will be gone and not step into a more stressful job..... jmo. Cheney deserves to be able to kick back and do what he wants now and I guess that could entail another cabinet job, but not my guess.
as long as he is working closely with W, I guess I wouldn't worry...but I like him and I think his wife is great, too...there's a couple who have put some very fruitful hours into their lives...
