The Kerry Line: New Jobs Are Being Created Across The Nation
George W. Bush ^ | May 21, 2004

Posted on 05/23/2004 4:12:41 PM PDT by RWR8189

"John Kerry's economic pessimism is at odds with the reality that unemployment declined across the country in April. From Michigan to Florida to Missouri, the President's pro-growth policies are benefiting more and more Americans."

-Steve Schmidt, Bush-Cheney '04 Spokesman

New Jobs Are Being Created Across The Nation
Increased Employment In 45 States. "From March to April, total nonfarm employment increased in 45 states, decreased in four states and the District of Columbia, and remained unchanged in one state. The largest employment increases occurred in Florida (+29,000), North Carolina (+20,700), Missouri (+20,000), Michigan (+19,300), Texas (+17,000), and California (+16,300). The largest over-the-month percentage increases occurred in Hawaii (+0.8 percent), Colorado and Missouri (+0.7 percent each), and South Dakota (+0.6 percent)." (Bureau of Labor Statistics, http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/laus.pdf, Accessed 5/21/04)

More Payroll Jobs. Payroll jobs increased in 45 states. Gains included 29,000 in Florida, 20,000 in Missouri, 4,300 in Ohio and 19,300 in Michigan. (Bureau of Labor Statistics, http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/laus.pdf, Accessed 5/21/04)

More Manufacturing Jobs. Manufacturing jobs in Ohio increased by 1,300. (Bureau of Labor Statistics, http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/laus.pdf, Accessed 5/21/04)

Increased Employment Over The Year. "Over the year, employment increased in 44 states and the District of Columbia and decreased in six states. The largest over-the-year gains in employment occurred in Florida (+168,400), Virginia (+85,900), California (+78,800), New Jersey (+59,500), and Arizona (+58,100). The largest percentage gains were reported in Nevada (+4.6 percent), Arizona (+2.6 percent), Virginia (+2.5 percent), and Florida and Hawaii (+2.3 percent each)." (Bureau of Labor Statistics, http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/laus.pdf, Accessed 5/21/04)

Unemployment Down. Unemployment rates declined in all four regions and in 29 states in April. Over the year, unemployment rates declined in all regions and in 47 states. The largest over-the-month unemployment rate decreases were reported in Michigan, Minnesota, and Maine. Big declines included California dropping from 6.6 percent to 6.2 percent, Michigan dropping 6.9 percent to 6.1 percent and Maine dropping from 4.9 percent to 4.3 percent. (Bureau of Labor Statistics, http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/laus.pdf, Accessed 5/21/04)

John Kerry's Campaign Rhetoric Talks Down The Economy
Kerry Advisor Says April Jobs Numbers Mean America Has A "Long Way To Climb." Kerry economic advisor Gene Sperling: "Well, try to get over your surprise, but here is the facts: we're in a historically deep hole on job performance. And these were a couple of steps up, but we got a long way to climb our way out. … It has a long, long way before you would say there has been a good economic or job performance over these last four years." (CNBC's "Squawk Box," 5/7/04)

What? This can't be. Employment is up, the nation is doing great. How could this have happened? President Bush isn't supposed to smart enough to tie his shoes, much less help revive a struggling economy. :)

Thanks for the post.

I'm an HR Administrator, and we're hiring like crazy for the first time in three years. The number of applications I now received per position has fallen, and the number of "over qualified" candidates has decreased significantly. I'd say average number of applications has dropped from about 120 per position to 60. These are professional positions with outstanding benefits.

Now this is anecdotal evidence, but added together it is a trend. I know hiring at my organization is not taking place in a vacuum, it is occurring in other places as well.

I just got through talking to a fellow employee who dropped by this office this evening at the same time I did. He joined our small business about 7 or 8 months ago; he had been laid off and needed a job and took this one even though the pay was not what he would like it to be. For the past three months he has been on the job doing contractor pipeline safety oversight and has received three serious job offers from fellow contractors, with very substantial pay increases, good benefits and daily per diem (including one in Saudi Arabia where he could pass as an Arab). He is Hispanic and bi-lingual, and a damn good worker. He told me he will likely give two weeks notice and move on at the end of the current project.

In the energy sector, the days of low paying jobs filled by over qualified persons have ended (though my boss hasn't figured that out yet). I just hope that other areas of the economy recover as robustly as this one has.

Yes, there seems to be new jobs being created. But in what sector are they being created? Mostly low paying jobs in retail and fast food. Home Depot, Lowes and Walmart are going through an expansion boom, that is where a good portion of these jobs are being created.

In 98 I was in sales making $52k a year. But I got downsized because Chinese imports were being offered for sale in the US market at a price that was below what our manufacturing costs were. So the company I worked for shut down its manufacturing plant in West Virginia and built a new plant in, you guessed it, China. Now that company can import the same product at Chinese prices.

So after 15 years with the company I was let go. There I was 45 years old and out of work in a poor economy. I sent resumes for 6 months for sales jobs in related industries, in that time I had one interview but they hired a college kid for half of what I was asking. Then I got hired by LOWES at $15.00 an hour to do outside sales. After 90 days I got a 4% raise, $0.60 per hour or $32,500 a year. Then they eliminated that sales position and made me a customer service associaye, but I got to keep my rate of pay. That was 4 years ago this month, I haven't had a raise since. They tell me that I am above the salary cap by 30 cents an hour. For a family of 4 that is the goverments poverty level.

I found that I was hired in at a very high rate of pay. Today they are hiring at $8.00 to $9.00. Thats not even a living wage in Texas. Check the states that have the most new jobs and see just what percebtage of those new jobs are fast foor and retail. You'll find that a high percentage are very kow low paying jobs

There is more but I need to get some sack time

I support Bush in everything he is doing. But the job statement by Kerry on the job is 100% true,

He or she probably posts the the same thing here over and over, and figured a fresh look was necessary.

Hi newbie. Welcome to FR. You need to look at the stats. I would post them for you, but you can Google as easily as I can. Many of these jobs are High paying factory jobs. Numbers are up in every sector, except Gubment jobs, salary up as well.

Sorry about your circumstances. Maybe you need to start looking again. I have looked at several jobs.com pages and there are many, many jobs of all types at fair wages available.

This reminds me of the statement made by a European woman during WWII in response to being notified about the shortage of bread: "That won't affect me, all we ever eat is toast."

Look, if Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, and others are adding jobs, they are not doing so in a vacuum. There would be no Home Depot jobs being added if there were no well-paying jobs being added elsewhere in the economy.

Anyway, your experience does not match up with the statistics and details of these BLS reports. Jobs are being added across virtually every region and every industry. A large part are being added in professional settings.

Of course, the point is lost if you are having trouble finding a good job. I truly wish you the best of luck in your endeavors.

I am in manufacturing. We are hiring plant, drivers and support staff. All part time employee's are being moved into full time slots, not that they have been part time on anything but paper for the past six months.

Things are looking up.

You can't be a good salesman with your attitude, it is not possible. That is why you aren't a salesman any longer.

Improve your attitude, improve your life. It doesn't work in reverse.

This is the news I've been waiting to see for so long! Last year was so very horrible for me and several of my friends.

This year is so very diffferent (but fascinating and lucrative) for me as a result of the sluggish job market at home. My life was so normal once. LOL

I had just applied for and accepted a position at a department store when I got the offer to come east last fall. It's nice to know that I'll probably have some decent options when I eventually return stateside.

I am also in manufacturing (although I am in the sales end of the process)
We are having extrordinary growth at this time.
Now if we could only buy enough steel to build to fill demand.
Things are definately looking up.

The poster is spewing dnc talking points. A caller to Hannity last week and a caller to Rush both tried to slip in that same story with 'minor' variations. Democrats are liars and dissemblers. They have been instructed to lie on public forums, to do all they can to promote the dnc talking points ... points which are of course the standard lies from Terry McAwful and co.

My Husband is also in manufacturing, and for the last year (but more so in the last 6 months), he has been working 12 hour days, 12-13 days in a row. They have just added another shift, and things are looking up.

Our income last year increased by 25%, we are looking at a decrease in income this year, but only because they are finally adding more people to keep up with the demand. This is one of the biggest scrap iron foundries in the world, and their outlook is nothing but up.

They make brake discs (among other things) for the big 3 automakers, and for many other companies, and they can not keep up. In fact the biggest problem they are having is the lack of scrap metals.

We have not seen production like this since late 1998, and they think this one seems even stronger at the base.
