I can tell you this- they are no friends of America, Israel, business in general, or freedom. Add to this their puppets suck.

ON the local front:
We are expecting up-wards to 20,000 troops over the weekend. The Governor declared a State of Emergency in late May. There are holding areas set up for "Detainees". There are at least 22 mobile SAM launchers setup on St Simons Island, Jekyll Island and other access points to Oceanside.
The scanner community is having a real ball (In God we trust; all the rest, we monitor).
Every alphabet soup government agency is represented in spades, and brought in their own communications system.
There are fly-overs from F-14s, helicopter gunships (spotted a group of 7 coming in - in formation yesterday morning).
I monitored a high altitude fly-over for video imaging downlink yesterday - from 60 miles out. Was able to monitor both the aircraft and the ground station. The lucky ones who can afford digital scanners with APC25 decoders are really getting a thrill monitoring certain coded transmissions. There are even deeper encryption devices that cannot be decoded.
We expect the "birdie" machines to go online sometime over the weekend. These will emit Radio Frequency "Birdies" that will cause most scanner devices to lock on to selected frequencies containing nothing but static. They can be programmed to disrupt most all the airwaves around the frequencies in use, in an attempt to thwart those who surveil the surveilers.
Cellphone conversations are being monitored and motorists stopped when their conversations are deemed questionable. Stopping by a bridge will get quick recognition from law enforcement. Taking pictures of bridges, electrical sub stations or other key structures will also merit a law enforcement acknowledgment (in person, and quickly). Extra Law Enforcement personnel have been brought in from all other the state; and beyond...
In terms of scanner listening, it is a target rich environment.
The circus officially starts Saturday morning, when the Sea Island Causeway will be checkpoint entry only; with proper identification. That is after you pass by the SAM sites where the causeway last crosses public access roads on St Simons Island. Sea Island residents can expect up to 3 checkpoint verifications when returning from the mainland or St Simons Island proper. Residents are advised to allot an extra hour of driving time for their commute on or off of Sea Island.
Marinas are being closed down. Waterways are being guarded. It is rumored that the maiden voyage of the new Nuclear Aircraft carrier from East Coast to West Coast will make it's current location coincide with the summit to offer an offshore launch platform for air support. With much of the nuclear sub fleet stationed out of St Marys, GA, additional resources are probably in the area in silent service.
Interesting times indeed...

Interesting times indeed...Yep, like the Chinese curse...
I appreciate the further information- I will add what I can as conditions warrant, but plan on avoiding as much of this nonsense as possible.
I reiterate my previous comment-- the powers that be claim G-8 is going to make us all rich & famous, but I am still waiting for my share from the 1996 Olympics...
( BTW, see my tagline... )

G-8 excites residents
Brunswick's Hispanic population likely is also staying home next week, but for entirely different reasons.
"We've gone out door to door telling them if they don't have to go out, then don't," said Gail Hutchinson of Su Casa, a local Hispanic aid agency. "This is not because they're illegal, but because so many of them are here legally but are waiting to get all of their papers or don't carry their papers with them all the time. It's to avoid running into any problems.

"I passed the "March for World Peace & Justice" protesters as they crossed the county line... they claim 1000 protesters, I counted about 30..."
"I lunched with security yesterday... the way they put it?
5000 policmen-
5000 National Guardsmen-
163 protesters..."
Remember, protesters claim 10,000 will appear.

This is fascinating, but I know it's a pain in the neck for those who live nearby.Yes, it is- my wife stayed over at work in Camden County ( neighboring county south ) a couple of days, and she called this morning to get an update on whether there were any roads to avoid coming home later. Far as I know, there aren't, and that's lucky since the only routes are I-95 or US 17, unless you take a bunch of winding, far-flung back roads that lead well into the interior of the state.

There's just no ideal place to hold these summits, I guess, but it's going to be very shocking for your area because you're in such a small area with a small population.
I will be reading this thread with interest once the summit actually starts.
Could you put me on your ping list if you have one?

Could you put me on your ping list if you have one? I would if I had any- got tired of all those "take me off yer !#$%^! ping list!" emails... but I'll try to remember to ping you if something unusual happens.
The biggest hazzard so far is careless drivers- I've nearly been hit more times than I can count by people suddenly crossing 3 or 4 lanes of traffic without warning.

A friend of ours, living here from Ireland, says "the heat makes you stupid" and no where is there more evidence of that than drivers. Be careful!
I'll just do in forum reviews of your threads to keep track of what's going on. You have enough to remember.

Thanks for keeping us up-to-date. Living just below Jax and we hear nothing. One would think you folks were in another world... or we were!
Used to fly into St Simons regularly, also had a good friend who built custom golf clubs at Sea Island. Lots of great memories.

Living just below Jax and we hear nothing. One would think you folks were in another world... or we were! The Times-Union ( jacksonville.com ) has pretty good coverage when they use their own reporters instead of the wire services. Local talk radio is full of colorful, and often very wry observations about G-8 as well.

I feel the same way about the T-Union. They had a pretty good spread this morning, some of the same pics you posted.
Thanks again, I'll keep this thread up if you are going to keep it for the length of the Summit.
