If you ever watch animal shows that shows how the male walrus holds on hundreds of female walrus on the beach, by constant fighting. He guards his perimeters, and wards off any male intruders, and prevents his female "bitches" from running away. This is a good picture that illustrates how Moslem men are fighting so hard to hold on this antiquated barbaric religion, which gives them sexual privileges over their bitches. Alright, I'll re-phrase -- given our already-existing commitments, I don't think we can afford a massive permanent presence in Iraq when we're running $500 billion dollar deficits.
I could be wrong, but I think it'll cause a serious budget crisis if we attempt to stay (to say nothing of the ongoing casualties).
That being said, I don't trust any of these Islamic fundamentalists as far as can spit, and I wouldn't be surprsied to find them making common cause against us as we happen to represent all the decadence of modernity, in addition to favoring Isreal's right to exist. We live in interesting times.
I believe the author's error was mainly that he failed to make clear that this sort of fundamentalism has infected the many branches of Islam.

Wahabbism is to Islam what Seventh Day Adventist is to Christianity.

Now, back to your point of about the authior being clueless, his point is that Wahabbi-style Islam is spreading even on to the Shiite world.
