LOS ANGELES — Limiting cell phone usage is a common goal of many legislatures, but California’s lawmakers want to up the ante, adding more than that to the list of what motorists can and can’t do behind the wheel.

A bill passed by the California state Senate (search) would subject drivers who talk on the phone, put on makeup, drink, eat, smoke, interact with pets or kids, read, write, tune the radio or program hand-held devices like Blackberries to fines of $35 for the first offense and $150 for the second.

I think they should focus on how people DRIVE, NOT what they do inside the car.

McClintock is against this law and I agree with him. I had to excerpt the article, so I couldn't post more of it, but I can paraphrase it. He said that there are already laws on the books for reckless driving. I agree. Police should focus on how the car moves, not what's happening inside.

I have seen drivers, who were not "distracted" drive very dangerously.

This only has to do with blue suited tax collectors engaging in a new feeding frenzy.

I think it's more than that.

I think cell phone users is becoming the next hated group, after smokers and overweight people.

Since many people make that point, that cell phone use is not the only distraction, CA is just trying to get around that argument, by including everything else.

But some people can walk and chew gum and the same time -- and drive and talk at the same time -- while others can't.

As I said, the law should focus on safe driving, and there are already laws on the books about that.

Are they going to ban children and passengers from cars next, since they can be a distraction too.

How about some enforcement of the existing traffic laws?

Naw, taht makes too much sense and it's against the grain of the liberals. When existing laws aren't being enforced, they just pass new ones.

I can understand the cell phone and makeup issue, those can get people killed as of late.

The rest I am not inclined to agree with.

I've been seeing the cell phone thing comming for some time now.

I guess the "click it or get a ticket" feeding frenzy is not enough. God knows CA needs revenue but this is ridicules.

I've seen people reading books and newspapers. Back when I was a truckdriver I saw a gentleman getting a ****job from a lady. You can see a lot from the cab of a truck.

What an awful place. Almost everything I read about this state strengthens the conviction of our decision to leave... for good!

(To be fair, the Central Valley - incl. Fresno, Modesto, and Stockton - is not so bad...)

California is a great state.

It's the liberals living here, that's the problem.

It's a beautiful state. Except for Utah, it seems the more beautiful the state, the less beautiful the people. I mean the latter in the "more than skin-deep" sense. This applies to WA as well - arguably just a beautful as CA.

Reagan came from CA, so did Nixon. I fear, though, that the libs have exceeded critical mass and it will take a massive crisis to change the electorates' minds and hearts. Having to choose between waging a social battle in a place held by the enemy and protecting my family from the harmful influences thereof, I opted for the latter.

Sandy (my daughter) will not grow up being taught that abortion is just fine and dandy, and to have her boyfriends "use a condom". I'll be d***ed before that happens.

Why don't they just get it over with and require everyone in a moving vehicle to wear a helmet and 6-point racing harness.

That will alleviate talking on the phone, makeup, drinking coffee, etc.

Plus it's easy to see who doesn't have a helmet on.

Think of the revenue.

(Being sarcastic, of course)

Arnie will never sign this piece of Socialist garbage. I love his idea of have the Assembly meet for only a few months a year.

The Socialist Democrats have got to go.

I have posted a couple of these articles on a Democrat-leaning board so that the readers can see when these dems sponsor such bills. Many Dems are libertarians are heart and think of Dems as being the fun-loving, freedom and happiness pursuing party.

When they could not be more wrong.

I think that many of them have never had the part beliefs laid out to them. They just see Republicans = Old and stody and Democrats = BJs in the White House, pot smoking party animals.

It is good for many registered Dems to see how elected Democrats are eroding their personal liberties.

Time for a class action suit overturning such idiotic laws. Since the law also makes illegal ambulance drivers, fire truck drivers, radio dispatched electric tans, plumbers, and cab drivers from using their radios. As well as Semi tractor trailer , and truck drivers from using their CB radio's. Also there is plenty of evidence to suggest blaring police sirens are also very distracting, and also must be banned.

I think those are rare compared to cell phone conversations.

If you are in an area of California with all our cars, you know of how strong the connection between bad driving and cell phones are.

I don't see much makeup in cars being applied, but once I was waiting forever for a woman in front of me to make the right turn, she was signaling me using hand signals.
The hand signal ended up being here drying her nails!

I didn't notice the article mentioning mobile phone text messages. Texting while driving is just stupid, but I know people who do it (and needless to say, I refuse to drive with those people.)

Then again, just the other day a cashier at my local supermarket was telling me about the $230 fine (plus licence demerit points) she copped from the police the other week. I smiled sympathetically and told her to get herself a ten-dollar plug-in headset (which as yet, are not illegal...here)
