This was a lead story on CBS radio news earlier this afternoon.
A year in prison? Hell, that's not a punishment, that's a vacation (compared to a year in Iraq)
Soldier accused of fragging requests change of venue [SGT Hasan Akbar trial update]
Abu Ghraib I hope.
Dumbass, joined up, decides he doesn't want to play by the rules and starts inventing his own rules. Used to be called desertion and the punishment was firing squad. 1 year is a slap on the wrist.
When did the punishment for desertion during time of war stop being the firing squad?
I bet you he would not have pulled this had such a penalty been available...but now a better man will go, and possibly die in his place.
and panties on the head
He will be a board member of Moveon.org soon after.
He is not a U.S. citizen, I hope after he gets out he is deported.
My recall of UCMJ is sketchy.
Mejia is being charged with being AWOL, not desertion. I'm wondering, is the punishment he received because he underwent a Special Court-Martial vice a General Court-Martial...?
If Mejias was really a conscientious objector (which is doubtful), he should have been a cook.
"If Mejias was really a conscientious objector (which is doubtful), he should have been a cook. "
Or a medic. COs, many of whom were Seventh Day Adventists, have historically served as medics in the field.
I served with a guy who was drafted and sent to Vietnam as a rifleman. I never did know his religious affiliation, if he had one. He did have a small amount of medical background, and requested that he be given an assignment as a medic. For once, the army did something right and he became a trusted medic who earned the name, "Doc".
He was seriously wounded with a sucking chest wound from an AK round. When the chopper that was dusting him off took off it took groundfire and Doc was wounded once again -in the arm.
The good news is that he made it home and it was fantastic to see him two years ago at a reunion.

I believe according to new INS rules as soon as he serves his time, he will be put on a plane and sent home.
Calls of bravo Camillo from fans while he was led away in handcuffs after conviction will long be part of his memory after concluding the one year in the brig.
His green card comes as a priviledge, not a right.
After green card revocation and leaving the brig he will find himself in handcuffs heading for a non stop flight to Nicaragua, or Costa Rica, where he holds dual citizenships.
Camillo, look forward to it and enjoy while the flight lasts.
He would have declared it before going the first time. Its pretty hard to make a conscientious objector claim when you had already gone once.
"A year in prison? Hell, that's not a punishment, that's a vacation (compared to a year in Iraq)"
Now THERE's an idea! Send him to Abu Ghraib!
I dunno.. I think this p*$$y would ENJOY the extra-curricular activities.
A hanging would have been much more suitable for this bootless and unhorsed punk.
