OUTNUMBERED British soldiers killed 35 Iraqi attackers in the Armys first bayonet charge since the Falklands War 22 years ago. The fearless Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders stormed rebel positions after being ambushed and pinned down.
Despite being outnumbered five to one, they suffered only three minor wounds in the hand-to-hand fighting near the city of Amara.
The battle erupted after Land Rovers carrying 20 Argylls came under attack on a highway.
After radioing for back-up, they fixed bayonets and charged at 100 rebels using tactics learned in drills.
Charge ... tactics from drills
When the fighting ended bodies lay all over the highway and more were floating in a nearby river. Nine rebels were captured.
An Army spokesman said: This was an intense engagement.
The last bayonet charge was by the Scots Guards and the Paras against Argentinian positions.

I'm wondering if maybe that Scottish skirt thing, sans the undies, with nice, tanned, hairy calfs and socks with a little balls on them didn't, for a moment, stun the enemy with sexual longings, until it was too late and the Scottie's were upon them.

Hand to hand combat is a way one has to fight in urban settings. Staying put and returning fire gets you into Black Hawk Down situations where you can take fire from all sides. It was charge for sure but probably most of teh killed were shot up close. It takes professional training to fight hand to hand while any joker can aim and shoot from fixed positions.

There may be alot of them, and they may be crazy, but they sure as hell can't shoot and they apparently can't fight worth a damn, either.
Actually, I read recently (and yes, I'm fumbling around for the source in a stack of books) that this type of result wouldn't be surprising from U.S. forces, so at this date in time, why not England too?
I believe our fatality infliction rate in WWI was 18-1, WWII something like 35-1, Korea 38-1, Vietnam 40-1 and GWI 185-1.
Keep on bringin' it sandys. The odds are getting worse day by day.
Hats off to the Mighty Brits today!

Does that count?

Can you imagine being in that crazy hate filled hell hole, getting ambushed by a larger force and hearing the cry "fix bayonets"!
Boy that'll get you damn blood going! It just doesn't get any more basic than hand to hand!

This is a great story but would someone please explain how bayonets could ever be more effective than bullets. And also, how effective would they be if your enemy was using bullets.
To: My Favorite Headache
To me the surprise isn't the outcome of the battle but the patriotic nature of the report published in the Sun..
If this same event had been reported by Jennings or Rather can you imagine how different the report would have been?
To: justanotherday
That's a difficult question to answer. The U.S. needs to do what's best for the U.S. The difficulty lies in whether we should be the world's policeman. If we aren't, someone else will step in. And I'd rather it be us than some country that doesn't like us.
Can we just abandon Israel? I don't think so, not after supporting them for so long. On the other hand, we don't need to be joined at the hip, nor is that position an anti-Semitic one: the Jews have every right to anihillate forces who threaten their lives. It's clear that they - even WITH Sharon - are the more reasonable and rational than the terrorists who hate them.
Sorry I can't be more clear-cut than that, it's a complex issue with no easy answers. Otherwise it would have been solved long ago.
