Apparently, someone found (I'm not kidding) a soda can with a wire sticking out of it. All is clear. After an investigation it was determined that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was on the flight, and the "wire" was infact a pubic hair.

This one unfortunately happened post-9/11. It was in fact a week or so later, and I was taking my first post-9/11 flight. As instucted, I arrived at BWI Airport three hours in advance of my 8:00 flight, just in time to participate in the evacuation of one entire wing of the terminal. It was several hours before they let us back in. I later read in the local paper that the evacuation was the result of somebody packing in a piece of checked luggage a water filter, as in a long cylinder with a hose coming out of one end. I can imagine what the baggage screener must have thought when that one popped up on the x-ray!
