Ex-president Bill Clinton, who made famous the phrase, "it depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is," is being honored by The American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City today for his "standard of correct utterance in the use of language." "He was selected because they admired how he was apparently always able to get up before an audience without notes and speak eloquently with full sentences that even had semicolons," the Academy's Virginia Dajani told the New York Sun.
The academy last bestowed its "spoken language" award five years ago on former New York Governor Mario Cuomo, whose keynote address to the 1984 Democratic convention turned him into a presidential contender.
"No one had ever described the problems of government . . . more clearly than [Clinton] had," said Mr. Cuomo, whom Mr. Clinton once eloquently described as "acting like a major mafiosi."
"Nobody does it like Clinton," Cuomo told the Sun.
In anticipation of Mr. Clinton's latest honor, the paper surveyed New Yorkers in downtown Manhattan on what they recalled as his most memorable oratory.
The phrases most often cited, the paper said, included such Clinton classics as, "I did not have sex with that woman, Miss Lewinsky" and "I didn't inhale."
