Letter from Senator John Cornyn (R-TX)
The good Senator himself | June 18, 2004 | Me

Posted on 05/18/2004 11:23:59 AM PDT by BeerSwillr

A few weeks ago I sent Texas Senator John Cornyn an e-mail asking him what he was going to try to do about steming the tide of illegal immigration. I received a reply recently and I thought I'd share his non-answer…

My e-mail…

Every day more and more illegal aliens cross over our southern border and find their way to cities across the USA. In clear violation of US immigration laws.

Some people argue that illegal aliens are coming here to help us, to take jobs that "no one else will take." Well I'm telling you that is an outright LIE and if you repeat it you are perpetuating a myth with no basis in reality.

They are also stealing the US government blind.

They are now sending $1 Billion dollars a month back to Mexico. That money is lost to our economy Senator Cornyn. We don't get to make up that loss. It's not reinvested in American companies, or spent in American stores.

Not only does our economy lose, the government also loses out on a huge revenue stream because most of these illegal aliens are working on a cash basis.

Figure it out Senator Cornyn, $12 billion that is never taxed. What are you going to do about stopping illegal immigration and this drain on our country.

Don't you see? The illegals are not here to help us, they are here to help themselves.

To our money, our schools, our colleges, our medical care, and in some cases our lives.

Something's got to be done. What are you going to do?

Senator Cornyn's reply…

Thank you for contacting me about the Border Security and Immigration Reform Act of 2003 (S. 1387). I appreciate having the benefit of your comments on this important issue.

The tragic events of September 11, 2001, drove home the fact that we must know who is in our country; why they are here; and whether they pose a danger to our citizens and our nation. Policymakers have long failed to address the flaws in our nation's immigration policy that - according to some estimates - have allowed as many as 10 million individuals to enter and remain in our county illegally. We can and must do better.

To begin addressing the weaknesses in our immigration system, I introduced S. 1387 on July 10,2003. This bill would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act, creating a temporary work-and-return program that would provide certain undocumented workers currently in the United States - and also certain workers from abroad - the opportunity to register as non-immigrant temporary workers. After a three-year term in the United States, temporary workers would be required to return to their home countries.

In order to protect American jobs, employers would be required to show a good-faith effort to first hire American workers before offering jobs to temporary alien laborers. This new program would also match willing workers with willing employers, including those low-skill, low-tech jobs in which the free market has indicated most American s are not interested. During the temporary work period, alien workers would pay the same taxes and receive the same protections from federal wage and labor standards as other employees in the United States. In addition, temporary workers would be permitted to return to their homes as needed during their work period, allowing them to travel without risking their lives in the hands of human smugglers.

This program is not amnesty - it will not provide an automatic path to citizenship. Upon completion of the employment period, temporary workers must return to their home countries. As A financial incentive to return home, S. 1387 would require a portion of a temporary worker's payroll taxes to be set aside in an investment account. This investment account could only be reclaimed by the temporary worker upon final return to his or her home country. The economic recovery that impoverished regions need to stem the tide of emigration will be jumpstarted when temporary workers return to their homes and families with skills and income. Enactment of this program will also allow law enforcement resources to concentrate their efforts on hunting down the real threat to our nation - the smugglers, drug dealers, and terrorists who endanger our homes and families.

I appreciate having the opportunity to represent the interests of Texans in the United States Senate. For your convenience, I have complied information relevant to S. 1387 at http://cornyn.senate.gov/reform Thank you for taking the time to contact me.

Sincerely,

John Cornyn United States Senator

. . . employers must make a good faith effort . . .

translate that as: Employers must give US citizen the right to refuse sub-standard wages first, before giving the job to an illegal.

the real sad thing is that hes goingot run for reelection and win becasue no one really cares enough to vote out these people and most preople dont want the illegal immigration problem solved becasue then at least half of theregistered freerepublic members would have absolutly nothing to bitch about anymore and there days would be really long and boring so they do stuff that insures the illegal immigrant problem stays unsolved such as voting for george bush to be reelectecd who has demonstrated for the last 4 years that he has no desire to close the borders

You will have a easier time gettting Slick Willy out of a free brothel then getting a straight up yes or no answer from either TX senator. They will dance around and issue like in a way that will put Fred Astair to shame.

"pose a danger to our citizens and our nation"

What's he consider a danger? The federal prison population is presently fill with 30% immigrants yet they comprise only 4% of overall US population. In California it's 40%. Most are serving time for violent crimes. To add insult to injury, a recent estimate suggests more citizens have been murdered since 9-11 by illegal immigrants, then were lost in the 9-11 attacks. The report said the murderers slipped back over the border where they are immune from prosecution. What gives? Are money and power so important to politicians that American lives can be wasted?

He lost me at:"undocumented workers"

We have no security whatsoever until our borders and our ports are secure. Security means no one and no thing gets in without US knowledge and approval. What we have right now is about one step above the honor system. It's on the same level as putting up a sign saying: "Please don't cross our borders illegally, unless you really, really want to".

Forget about the jobs and economic issues, look at the security implications of having our borders wide open; as they are right now. Osama Bin Laden could - seriously - be standing on American soil as I type this, and we wouldn't have a clue. What's stopping him? If dirt-poor, uneducated, untrained people have little to no trouble crossing our borders at will, what exactly is there to prevent OBL or any of his terrorist followers from doing exactly the same thing? The last group (9/11) flew in from different parts of the world. What exactly is there to prevent the next group from riding in on a donkey from south of the border?

Until we fix our border/port/immigration problems, any talk of security is both hollow and meaningless, and any talk about providing protection from terrorists is little more than a sick and sad joke.

Cornyn's a putz, but compared to our other senator, he's a towering intellect!

At least CORNYN didn't co-sponsor the McCain-Feingold abrogation of freedom of speech!
