AN Indonesian district head on Tuesday released 100 snakes to help farmers fight rats which have wreaked havoc with the local rice harvest, a report said.
Aided by two snake experts, Sleman District Chief Ibnu Subiyanto freed the snakes, averaging two metres long at 15 separate locations in rice fields in Cangkringan, near the central Java city of Yogyakarta, the state Antara news agency said.
The released snakes included pythons, the report said.
"These snakes that we have released are to protect the crop. Therefore, if farmers see these snakes, do not catch or kill them," Subiyanto told farmers watching the event from a safe distance.
Cangkringan subdistrict head Hadi Mulyono said farmers had tried other ways to get rid of the rats, including smoking them out of their holes, without much success.
Not fond of RATS.
Granddad ALWAYS kept at least one Bull snake in the grain barn! They are scary looking rascals and hiss to sound just like a rattler, but there will be NO mice around when you have a friendly neighborhood Bull snake in residence. As far as I know, they aren't poisonous, but they will scare the devil out of you if you surprise one.
More snakes, Pong
Ahhh..to be 8 again.
I was surprised by one last year......scary. And they will bite.....but aren't poisonous.
LOL! That's what I thought, too. Did we get this guy to go after Kerry, Kennedy et al?
Hopefully, these are NOT the same rats being trained to detect mines..
Could try that in the Fleet Center.
I very calmly watched a black rat snake crawl off my porch 2 days ago. I am hoping he will eat the mole that is making my life miserable.
The rattlesnake I saw at the end of the porch last summer is still dead.

LOL. We have 4 foot+ rat snakes that like to slither up the posts in our carport to get the baby swallows in their nests. That's where I draw the line with them. They emit a musty/skunky smell when threatened too. They can have all the rats/mice/frogs, etc in the barn that they want. But not my baby birds!

Hmmmm! Maybe we could send a few of them down to DC, to take care of the Rat infestation there.
If the Brits are betting on this, I'll back the rats.
I wonder if this strategy would work on the floor of the senate?
Skinner: Well, I was wrong. The lizards are a godsend.
Lisa: But isn't that a bit short-sighted? What happens when we're overrun by lizards?
Skinner: No problem. We simply unleash wave after wave of Chinese needle snakes. They'll wipe out the lizards.
Lisa: But aren't the snakes even worse?
Skinner: Yes, but we're prepared for that. We've lined up a fabulous type of gorilla that thrives on snake meat.
Lisa: But then we're stuck with gorillas!
Skinner: No, that's the beautiful part. When wintertime rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death.
Totally agree:
I know of at least two that have take up residence here on my place. Named one after a former boss and the other after a former wife (similiar dispositions)
Talk about bad attitudes, they will kill rattlesnakes as much as rodents.
"Talk about bad attitudes, they will kill rattlesnakes as much as rodents."
I had forgotten about Bull snakes and rattlers! You are right...my granddad kept them for that, too. One of his snakes really DID have a somewhat superior attitude...it would coil up in the sun on a porch step, and no amount of shushing with a broom would move it! Just a lot of hissing, striking, and sun-sleeping!!
When my dad bought a farm it was riddled with rats and snakes. He bought a King Snake, turned it loose. The place was clean pretty soon and the King left for better eating elsewhere. When rats and snakes started to come back, Dad would just bring in another King Snake.
