At least with Sarin you know right away. It is the undetected anthrax that worries me.

Well, what happens now?!
The theory has always been
that if anyone

uses biochems
against us, then our response
would be big time fierce . . .

The two soldiers have "minor health problems", per CNN.

Sarin Nerve Gas Bomb Explodes in Iraq

"PA"

A roadside bomb containing sarin nerve agent has exploded in Iraq near a US military convoy, said a US military spokesman today. There were no casualties.

“The Iraqi Survey Group confirmed today that a 155 millimetre artillery round containing sarin nerve agent had been found,” said Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt, the chief military spokesman in Iraq.

“The round had been rigged as an IED (improvised explosive device) which was discovered by a US force convoy.

“A detonation occurred before the IED could be rendered inoperable. This produced a very small dispersal of agent,” he said.

Iraq began producing sarin in 1984 and admitted to possessing 790 tons of it in 1995.

Saddam Hussein used the gas against Kurds in northern Iraq in 1988.

Why do you say "unknowingly"?

I said may have unknowingly used it. They may have thought it was a conventional warhead. The chemical rounds are probably marked differently but the terrorists may not have understood the markings. Or maybe they are stupid enough to hand us a propaganda victory. Let's send the remnants to Hans Blix.

I'm loath to admit this, but I was watching MSNBC. (Yes let teh floggings begin) Anyway, they had David Kay on and he was spinning this as:
"This is a leftover munition from the early ninties. We went to war because Iraq was supposed to be actively producing rounds. This is just one shell, probably mixed up with others and over looked when Saddam destoryed the others."

And there we have the new lib talking points of the day.

FROM SKY NEWS:

NERVE GAS SHELL EXPLODES IN IRAQ

A shell loaded with the deadly sarin nerve gas has exploded in Iraq.

The artillery round, which was set up as a roadside bomb, went off as Coalition soldiers were inspecting it.

Two soldiers were treated for minor injures.

Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt told a news conference that only a small amount of the gas was released.

"Two explosive ordnance team members were treated for minor exposure to nerve agent as a result of the partial detonation of the round," Kimmitt told a press conference in Baghdad.

He said that the deadly agent was produced after two chemicals in separate sections of the shell mixed after it was fired.

"Mixing and dispersal of the agent from such a projectile as an IED (improvised explosive device) is very limited," he said.

"The former regime had declared all such rounds destroyed before the 1991 Gulf war."

A sarin gas attack on Tokyo's subway, carried out by the Aum Shinrikyo religious cult in 1995, killed 12 people.

A single drop of the gas can cause an agonising, choking death.

Those soldiers just THINK they were injured By a Sarin containing bomb.

That thought was probably put in their heads by Karl Rove, or Dick Cheney or a Halliburton contractor.

Everyone – but Fox news watchers – knows that their were never any WMD’s in Iraq. And Saddam Hussein used profits from oil sales to buy medicine and fluffy bunny toys for Iraqi kids. Until Cheney and Halliburton took those fluffy bunny toys and filled them with sand to protect Halliburton profit-mongering employees.

That is why, everywhere you go in Iraq nowadays, there are local peasants protesting at the gates of the fluffy-bunny sandbag protected encampments of the Imperialist American military-industrial-Halliburton invaders.

I'll give it a shot. Some tank and artillery shell do not activate untill the thrust of being sent downrange. In this instance, TAWAG, is since it was blown up in place by conventional explosive it didn't get a chance to mix completly, hence a small amount was released.

Why would an exploded artillery shell have a "small release?

Kimmitt said that it was a two chamber setup, where two chemicals have to mix to get the desired full result. Since it exploded on the ground and not launched from an artillery piece, I guess the process didn't have time to complete. Can anyone be more specific?

From reply #82:

"The round was an old binary-type requiring the mixing of two chemical components in separate sections of the cell before the deadly agent is produced," Kimmitt said. "The cell is designed to work after being fired from an artillery piece."

He said the dispersal of the nerve agent from a device such as the homemade bomb is "limited."
