Torvalds claim to "invent" Linux probably false, says new study
Fri May 14, 5:49 PM ET
Washington, DC (FeatureXpress) May 14, 2004 - Popular but controversial "open source" computer software, often contributed on a volunteer basis, is often taken or adapted without permission from material owned by other companies and individuals, a study by the Alexis de Tocqueville Institution finds. Among other points, the study directly challenges Linus Torvalds (news - web sites)' claim to be the inventor of Linux (news - web sites). In one of the few extensive studies on the source of open source code, Kenneth Brown, president of AdTI, traces the free software movement over three decades -- from its romantic but questionable beginnings, through its evolution to a commercial effort that draws on unpaid contributions from thousands of programmers. Brown's account is based on extensive interviews with more than two dozen leading technologists including Richard Stallman, Dennis Ritchie, and Andrew Tanenbaum.

Why do you guys even bother to respond to these kinds of articles? Why does MS bother to keep buying these kinds of articles? You'd think they'd learn that it ain't working anymore.

but by "funds" does that mean $100 or $100,000,000 a year? If a study came out saying kerry was right by an org that received donations form kerry people here would not be asking how much (nor should they). When a company takes one *dime* from another company they compromise their ability to be unbiased..

Tons of people and companies donate money to various causes -- and that doesn't automatically turn those organizations into mouthpieces for their benefactors. Yet you were one of those people saying Groklaw is bought and paid for by IBM just because years ago IBM donated some hardware to the iBiblio project that hosts thousands of public sites, one of its newest members being Groklaw. Yet you don't think Microsoft directly giving money to an organization would influence its studies of things important to Microsoft's business.

I'd like you to produce an accounting of how much was actually contributed by MS Umm Im not going to call the place and ask how much they get from MS and they dont post it on their site. I guraentee they get more from MS than Linux vendors..

Although this paper may well be FUD, and even could be MS FUD, you are the ones that are blindly attacking here without the facts. Didn't you get the memo? Everything that's not Bush's fault is Bill Gates' fault.

Wow, I'm so hurt [NOT]. Given that response, I think you need to read that thread.

As I said, to make it a way you can understand, think "Democrat lies." When Dims start spewing something against Bush, you can pretty much bet it's so full of slant, half-truths and innuendo to make the whole package one big lie.
False analogy. This organization doesn't "represent" Microsoft as the DNC represents Democrats.

The point was that Groklaw couldn't have even existed without IBM's contributions. Big freakin' difference.

Your guarantees are worthless. You haven't even lifted a finger to gather any evidence, one way or another.

This organization doesn't "represent" Microsoft as the DNC represents Democrats. You are trying so hard to avoid the obvious. When one is used to seeing a specific activity from an organization, one can predict with likelihood that further actions will fall under the same theme. Microsoft's theme for dealing with competition is FUD, always has been, always will be.

How much did MS pay? Did MS pay? You simply don't know. It's a guess. An uneducated guess, at that.

That's hilarious. Kerry should donate money to the NRA and the Catholic Church, then. /SARCASM

Until you trolls can prove that a significant -- and I do mean significant -- amount of cash changed hands between MS and this guy, you're twisting in the wind and grasping at straws. Your comments are nothing more than uninformed rants.

The point was that Groklaw couldn't have even existed without IBM's contributions. Big freakin' difference. You are so very wrong. Groklaw existed before it even moved to iBiblio, which had long before that received an IBM donation (BTW, there is anti-IBM information on iBiblio). This is recorded fact. Meanwhile, Microsoft is paying money directly to people who research papers about matters important to Microsoft. That is also recorded fact.
Where there is no connection, you see a strong one. Where there is a clear strong connection, you see none. Everyone should take back any suggestion that you are astroturfing for Microsoft -- even they wouldn't be that stupid. You must just be a freelance Microserf.

Why should I? Groklaw freely admits it.
