For all that bad news, our town crime rates are VERY low compared to most cities. Violent crime is 44% of the national average. My old neighborhood in Mira Mesa, CA was 118% of national average. My parents home in Chula Vista, CA was rated 160%. Most of our criminal activity is property crime committed to finance drug habits

Please explain... I'm a little slow, sorry. What is a good rating? Since those 2 numbers are over 100% I'm assuming that is very very bad? I'm worried now because there is a high probability we are moving to S.D. this fall for hubby's work!

A 100% rating for violent crime means your community matches the national average. My town in Idaho has 44% of the national average. My mom's place in Chula Vista has 60% more than the national average. Does that clarify it? You can pull the crime demographics for various areas from census websites. A call to the law enforcement agency responsible for the area you are considering is worth the effort. A quick look over the map of registered sex offenders might be worthwhile too. San Diego County has that on a CDROM and the talk show host Rick Roberts has hosted it on his website in the past.
