Vesicular stomatitis in the USA

The last outbreak of vesicular stomatitis in the United States was reported
to the OIE in November 1998. This information, dated 19 May 2004, was
received on 20 May 2004 from Dr Peter Fernandez, associate administrator,
Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, United States Department of
Agriculture (USDA), Washington, DC:

Location of the outbreak: State of Texas, Reeves County.
Nature of diagnosis: clinical and laboratory.
Date of initial detection of animal health incident: 10 May 2004.
Estimated date of primary infection: 7 May 2004.

Total number of animals in the outbreak: 9 horses and 9 steers.
Total number of cases: 3 horses.
Total number of deaths: 0.
