They sure match the profile of the types of people we saw in the San Diego area prior to the 9-11 event. If they are using Iridium satellite phones, they are globally usable. Iridium phones can be coarsely located using the Iridium doppler methods. It's not good enough for door to door navigation, but you can locate the phone within a city block. If your daughter has their phone number, there is a way to find the phone. The phone number will also track down the source of financing tht put the phones in service.

The jihadis believed they were changing cell phones early in the process, but they were actually just moving the SIM cards between different phone hardware. Essentially the only thing they accomplished was "window dressing". Someone in the press finally let the cat out of the bag on that detail. I'm sure they know to switch SIM cards to break the trail now.

The SIM cards used in the Madrid bombings were ones that had been used over a significant period of time. The owner of the account was known and rapidly caught when the cellphone was recovered.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that al Qaeda has "insiders" in phone companies, police departments, air traffic controls and the U.S. military. They have patiently infiltrated the U.S. to gain advantage in executing an attack. The guys that pulled off the attack against the oil contractor in Saudi Arabia had been employed by the company for 3 years prior to the attack. They used their employee id cards to enter the building.

I do have the phone number. My daughter and her friend are really clueless. It took me quite sometime to draw this information out of them. I only found out last week that her friend had been seeing a 22 yr. old which I thought was too much. They were reluctant to go further and tell me more about this young man, because at first I was so annoyed that she was hanging around a 22 yr. old. On top of this, they kept insisting that there are no terrorists in Minnesota and that the terrorists have their sole sights on New York. I, personally, have not met this man in question, but my daughter has, and so has her girlfriend's mother. The mother insists that he not only is he not French, but he cannot speak the language either. My daughter's friend relocated here to Minnesota at Christmas time, and so they are not aware that this is the place of the 19th hijacker, etc. When I expressed my concerns to the mother, she too insisted that Minnesota was not a target, but that NYC and San Jose California (???? say what?) were.

DHS should be able to use the phone number as a starting point for investigation. Jill may have an expeditious route to pass the information. If not, I can ask my former boss to see if the number belongs to an Iridium phone. He is best friends with the guy who runs the new Iridium organization. Getting action on Friday before the Memorial Day weekend is going to be a potential problem. Many of the contacts that would be helpful could be making a 4 day weekend.

How can you know if the number belongs to an Iridium phone? Would it start with numbers different from the local area numbers? Can I send the number and information to you or Jill?

San Jose is in the middle of the Silicon Valley. Definitely an economic target. HP, Apple, Intel and many others in the general area.
