Most Americans would universally agree with Jefferson's definition of a patriot. In addition, most actually think of themselves as patriotic, although, frequently, the form of action patriotism takes is quite different from one U.S. citizen to another.
With support for the occupation in Iraq at an all-time low, many Democrats are asking, "Why isn't John Kerry 20 points ahead of Bush in the polls, instead of in a dead heat?" The two-party system may not meaningfully express the wide range of political aspirations of the people. Disenchantment is widespread. There are as many conservatives disappointed by and angry about President Bush's policies on deficits, outsourcing of jobs and the huge expansion of the federal government as there are progressives annoyed by Kerry's support of the war in Iraq and his ambivalence about same-sex marriage.

Oh man, I'm in trouble now!
Thanks! I live and am active in a small Houston bedroom community, so this could really be an asset to us out here.
Oops. I meant my post to you, sfwarrior.... So here's a BUMP for good measure!
Please add me to your political action ping list. (And give me a shout if you develop some SF Bay Area activities.)
IMO most mainstream know that. They make it an "issue" but it's not the issue. As David Horowitz pointed out, for leftists the issue is not the issue. I interpret that to mean issues are weapons. THE issue is the partial or complete destruction of the sovereignty and the military might of the United States of America. It's been that way since I started paying attention during the Korean War.
I agree with the author. Confront the enemy. I do email columnists and reporters with my opinions of their writings. All are civil and some get replies. I see those emails and my FreeReupblic posts as very little but added to others we do generate a storm. I stopped writing letters to the editor though most were published.
I am not a joiner but I do attend rallies at the California state capitol building. I've been on the air as a caller three times though I've listened to radio talk since the 1950s -- 1940s if you count Baby Snooks, Fibber McGee, and others. I threw my TV away ten years ago.
Talk show hosts are the true patriots. At least two problems though: egos and economic competition. Both are critical to success, theirs and ours. But would they put all aside even if we were being invaded? I wonder.
I know we are winning every time I see a mainstream item about the need for a "Fairness Doctrine." I'll know we won when a desperate left provokes violence such as almost happened during the Florida election dispute. Karenna Gore revealed that her father stopped Party efforts to provoke race riots to influence the outcome. Will Democrats stop them this time? If not do Republicans have the guts to stop them and win for the sovereignty and the military might of the US of A?
The Kool-Aid drinkers on both sides of the aisle will forever vote for "their guy", no matter what he or she does. Its the 4% who think for themselves that decide elections, but even then its always a win for the 2-Party Cabal.
Even though Jefferson was a democrat he was a loyal patriotic American, a far cry from those in that party today who would sell out this country to unelected world government bodies like the UN in a heartbeat.
I went to the first two SF Townhall Meet-Ups, but stopped after that because frankly, there didn't seem to be much purpose to it all. Perhaps it was a lack of leadership, but none of us seemed to know what we were doing there. And there's only so much conservative commiserating one can take part in. But perhaps things have improved since then...
I'm going to one in the East Bay and it does take leadership and enthusiasm. And unfortantely the left has both qualities in spades. Just sending emails on the internet and posting to conservative message boards isn't goint to cut it. It will take a triangulation to reinforce ideas and awaken the people.
I know there is a problem of leadership amongst conservatives, how else can you explain that Meetup.com does so well with lib groups and poorly with conservatives groups for the reasons you had mentioned.
But I do believe that the personal meetings are the building blocks for further action and networking. Otherwise conservatives will dream their days away asleep at the switch.
