Zell Miller: Finger-pointing, Apologies Over Prisoner Treatment Only Boost Enemy
"I Refuse to Join In National Act of Contrition'
WASHINGTON U.S. Senator Zell Miller (D-GA) today delivered the following statement on the floor of the United States Senate addressing the situation at the Abu Ghraib prison.
Mr. President, here we go again, here we go again. Rushing to give aid and comfort to the enemy. Pushing and pulling and shoving and leaping over one another to assign blame and point the finger at America the Terrible. Lining up in long lines at the microphones to offer apologies to those poor, pitiful Iraqi prisoners.
Of course, I do not condone all the things that went on in that prison, but I for one, Mr. President, refuse to join in this national Act of Contrition over it.
Those who are wringing their hands and shouting so loudly for heads to roll over this seem to have conveniently overlooked the fact that someones head HAS rolled - that of another innocent American brutally murdered by terrorists. Why is it? Why is it that theres more indignation over a photo of a prisoner with underwear on his head than over the video of a young American with no head at all? Why is it that some in this country still dont get that we are at war? A war against terrorists who are plotting to kill us every day. Terrorists who will murder Americans at any time any place any chance they get.
And yet here we are, America on its knees, in front of our enemy, begging for their forgiveness over the mistreatment of prisoners. Showing the enemy and the world once again how easily America can get sidetracked and how easily America can turn against it self.
Yes, some of our soldiers went too far with their interrogation tactics and clearly were not properly trained to handle such duty. But the way to deal with this is with swift and sure punishment, and immediate and better training. There also needs to be more careful screening of who it is we put in these kinds of sensitive situations.
And no one wants to hear this, Mr. President and Im reluctant to say it. But there should also be some serious questioning of having male and female soldiers serving side by side in these kinds of military missions.
But instead, I worry that the HWA - the Hand-Wringers of America - will add to their membership and continue to bash our country ad nauseam. And in doing so, hand over more innocent Americans to the enemy on a silver platter.
So I stand with Senator Inhofe of Oklahoma, who stated that hes more outraged by the outrage than by the treatment of those prisoners. More outraged by the outrage. Its a good way of putting it. Thats exactly how this Senator from Georgia feels.
How sad that this honorable senator will not be running for re-election. The rat party is a national party no more.

Nailed It!
Moral Clarity BUMP !
This ping list was originally based on my VDH ping list, but is not author-specific now. You are welcome in or out, just freepmail me.
I like your "moral clarity" ping!...God bless America..I am proud of my country!
I do hope the good Senator has a speaking part at the R convention this summer.
Senator Miller makes me proud to be a Georgian everytime he stands up to speak these days.
Go Zell!
Another guy who actually has some guts to put this thing in the proper perspective sadly there are so few.
BTW does anybody know if Kerry or Kennedy has said even a word yet about Nick Berg? I bet they haven't.
How sad that he is not the Senator from my home state of Indiana.
We could use a Senator with some spine left in him.
"HWA - the Hand-Wringers of America"
Great speech! I love it!
Such apt words. Go Zell. I called the senators office and told them what I thought.
The problem with comparing the murder of Mr. Berg, with the porn in Abu Ghraib prison is that the two are so different. One is committed by low life savages, who are belong to barbaric culture, and violent religion. Every body knows that, and no one is surprised that they are sub-humans. Historically, Moslems have slaughtered so many people; to the extent that the word ASSASIN in the dictionary explains its Arabic Moslem roots. The others, the trail trash Americans in Abu Ghraib, they are belong to the most civilized country the best military, the best religion (Christianity requires us to love our enemies), the best instruction (to win the heats and minds of the Iraqis), and hence the world sense of disbelief/disappointment.
I don't understand why we couldn't get him to switch parties and run for an office somewhere. A little late now, of course. But a future veep choice????? Maybe a "Cheney replacement" halfway through the next term?
I called his office yesterday and thanked him for supporting America and our Troops. Toll free 877-762-8762 just tell operator who you want to speak to.
Bump for Zell. I hope President Bush has a place for a man with a spine in his administration.
I heard him on the Floor of the Senate he was on FIRE!
Us conservatives up in MA continue to be embarrassed by fat-a$$ed traitor Kennedy 24/7, and can only be jealous of states with the good sense to vote a man like Zell to office!
