I believe that the possibility that he was a willing dupe (up to the final moments of course)of his own killers cannot be ruled out with any degree of certainty. If it is true that they tried to bargain his life for the release of prisoners he may well have been a willing player who thought that the taped address was going to be nothing more than a warning.
