"CBS Evening News" anchor Dan Rather has decreed that the video showing al-Qaida terrorists beheading American contractor Nick Berg will not be shown in its entirety on his network, though the network has had no such problem in the past broadcasting other grisly images.
Reports the Web site dedicated to monitoring Rather's broadcasts, RatherBiased.com:
"The decision - made first by the staff of the CBS Evening News, including managing editor Dan Rather - now an official news division policy, came on the same night [Tuesday] that the network announced it was going to air footage of an American casually talking about killing Iraqi prisoners on tonight's 60 Minutes II program."
While CBS decided to keep its focus on the Iraqi prison scandal, audio of Berg's execution was broadcast on talk radio repeatedly on Wednesday, in local venues as well as on nationally syndicated broadcasts such as the Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity shows.
RatherBiased.com noted that while CBS deemed the Berg beheading too gruesome for a full airing, it had no such qualms about showing grisly images in the past - such as a video of a South Vietnamese soldier shooting a Vietcong officer in the head.
For that episode CBS even "produced a special report on the event, complete with a play-by-play narration from correspondent John Lawrence," noted RatherBiased.com.
Just three weeks ago, Mr. Rather's other CBS production, "48 Hours," broadcast gruesome still photos of Princess Di as she lay dying after an August 1997 car crash in Paris.
The photos sparked near-universal outrage in the British press. No other U.S. TV outlets dared show the horrific images. Mohamed Al Fayed, father of Diana's paramour, Dodi Al Fayed, denounced the network for its publicity stunt and filed a lawsuit claiming defamation.

I'm waiting to hear some kind of explanation of why the media thinks it's ok to show coffins and not what happens to four American contractors....why they think it's ok to show dumb pictures from a few knuckle head soldiers but totally turn a blind eye to the murder of Nick Berg barely 48 hours after it happened?

More people need to realize that the newscasts that they watch are filtered for political purposes.
The biggest problem with seeing the filtering, is that they are all similarly filtered. Major newspapers and television newscasts are all consistent among each other, and whoever takes the effort to compare sees that and concludes that they all can't be biased in the same way, therefore they are not biased.
Furthermore, the constant exposure permeates culture to the point of core liberal beliefs being espoused in non-news television shows and movies. Being entirely surrounded, the American public is almost unable to see what is going on, and the people who espouse the opposite are then marginalized as lunatics or conspiracy theorists.
Even the "conservative" cable news is moderate, and furthermore does not permeate the culture very well. More 20 somethings get their news from Jay Leno's monologue and Comedy Central's Daily Show. What we really need is a Daily Show style program with a cross between a stand-up comedian and Ann Coulter as the host.

"I had someone at the Houston police station shoot me with heroin so I could do a story about it. The experience was a special kind of hell. I came out understanding full well how one could be addicted to 'smack,' and quickly."
"I've tried everything. I can say to you with confidence, I know a fair amount about LSD. I've never been a social user of any of these things, but my curiosity has carried me into a lot of interesting areas."
--Dan Rather in Ladies' Home Journal, July 1980 edition.
This explains a lot. I would say he is still curious.

I found myself watching CBS last night....after about 5 minutes a plug for the local news was aired and there was the picture....leash girl with her prisoners. Then I realized what I was doing and quickly changed the channel.

Not to mention it would be on the cover of every magazine and fromt page above the fold on every newspaper!

I read two very dumb people in that story.
1) Dumb Dan to try heroin!
2) The dumber cop to give dumb Dan a fix...in the Houston police station!
Maybe, that's why all of the curious dopes at CBS are 15 degrees out of plumb.

I guess it's OK if a Cop is your dealer. If you do it out of "curiosity", youre not really doing junk.
