Long-winded but some good points that needed saying. I suggest that Islamofascism be used rather than the rather vague two words of 'Militant Islam'. We might even get a few liberals to join in the war if we use Islamofascism!

when they talk about this central tenet, jihad, as a duty to take up arms, they have history and tradition on their side.

Well, we have some history and tradition on our side also. Dresden, Toyko, Hiroshima and Nagasaki are only more recent examples. Time to dust off our "traditions"?

The pacifist's saying, "violence never settled anything", is likely to once again be proven wrong, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Don't you think you should post articles from National Review, Reason, Foreign Affairs and similar publications under the "editorial" topic? Even if they're not masthead editorials, good OpEd columns and commentaries do not necessarily merit being given the short shrift of not being categorized as closely as possible. If the "Click to Add Topic" key worked, then I wouldn't have made this comment.

I'm not criticizing for the sake of criticizing. Timely articles like this one will get more hang time and attention when given the "editorial" designation, as opposed to being shuffled off to cyberspace when classified as "extended news" or nothing at all. In other words, I've noticed that articles that can hang in appropriate sidebars get more comments.

I'll argue that it's the closest appropriate classification as opposed to "Breaking News", "Front Page News", "Annoucements", etc. Flame away, if you must. This is directed more to other posters. Adios

The militants had the kind of suasion that could turn whole communities into captive audiences.

Reminds me of a guy in Karbala, age 31, his dead father has a city named after him...

Sadar and Karbala are a case study...of what is wrong with Islam and Muslims

If it wasn't for GW...this would be playing out in America twenty years from now...instead its today in Karbala...thank god

Bump for an extremely clear-headed essay.

"Impress upon the minds of terrorists and potential terrorists everywhere, and upon the populations and governments inclined to support them, that American retaliation will be powerful and uncompromising. You will never deter fanatics, but you can frighten those who might support, harbor or attempt to use terrorists for their own ends. Our basic task in the world today is to restore a sense of American power, capabilities and resolve. We must be hard, or we will be struck wherever we are soft. It is folly for charity to precede victory. First win, then unclench your fist."

'Nuff said.
