Berg died because Islamic loonies murdered him. If he hadn't been available, they would have killed one of the other hostages they have stashed away in Iraq (all of whom did have legitimate business in Iraq, and one of whom is an American soldier).

They just wanted to dress somebody up in a US prison jumpsuit and kill him as their "statement," and the unfortunate Nicholas Berg happened to be handy.
