Oklahoma lawmakers see new abuse photos

Inhofe says fresh images aren't that much worse.

By Chris Casteel, Washington Bureau

Oklahoma federal lawmakers Wednesday viewed fresh photos of Iraqi prisoner abuse at the hands of American soldiers.

Sen Jim Inhofe, R-Tulsa, said the photos were "actually nothing much different than we've already seen. I was surprised. I was expecting to see things that were a whole lot worse.

"A lot of the pictures didn't have any of the detainees in them. They showed seriouis behavioral problems by the seven prison guards."

He said the pictures shouldl not have been taken because it is against the Geneva Convention to prhotograph prisoners. But he said the fact that the behavior was investigated and the garduards are being charged "shows that part of the system is working."

Outraged at outrage

Inhofe, who said Tuesday that he was more outraged at the outrage than he was at the treatment of the prisoners, said Wednesday that he didn't think the prictures viewed privately by lawmakers should be released by the government. But he said he had no doubt they would get out somehow.

Sen. Don Nickles, R-Ponca City, viewed the Pentagon photos Wednesday and released a statement about the entire situation.

"The photos from Abu Ghraib Prison have damaged our efforts to restor peace, freedom and stable government to Iraq," Nickles said.

"The individuals responsible for these criminal actions should -- and I believe will -- be brought to justice as as possible. As of now, I have no reason to believe that this is anything but the action of a few bad individuals."

"Today, the Atlanta Journal and Constipation has the Prisoner Abuse story on Page One, as it has now for days. "

same here in Austin paper. Many-above-the-fold days of screaming front page headlines. Over a story that only rates inside page coverage.

Mountains out of molehills.

Yeah, what *if* things were reversed:

1. WE WERE CAUGHT KILLING CIVILIANS RITUALISTICALLY IN GRISLY TORTURE SCENES
and
2. THEY WERE CAUGHT MAKING OUR PRISONERS GET NEKKID

Which would cause the howls of outrage.
Would the media even make a fuss about the enemy? Of course not. The double standard is clear - we have to pass a much much much much higher hurdle.

Does the media even *care* when pro-coalition Iraqis are gunned down in the street? Where is the outrage when al-Sadr's men killed a man?

What about the *daily* outrages by the other side, ignored in the press so insistent on making President Bush look as bad as possible:
http://www.hughhewitt.com/index.htm#
"I have no ideas how many summary executions these people have committed on the citizens of Iraq who they perceive as cooperating with the coalition but it is in the thousands. We have seen it happen. We found one body in Fallujah as the Marines advanced that was clearly tortured (feet cut off, head bludgeoned in...) before being killed. There are more stories than I can recount. The criteria for a death sentence here? - Refusing to fight for the terrorists or maybe taking a job emptying portajohns on a US base. If you are thought of being a spy, your entire family is at risk."

Rumsfeld at least has been consistent. Both we and others should treat prisoners humanely, and if they are not, the matter should be corrected and malefactors dealt with.

I see NO SUCH CONSISTENCY FROM THE LEFT NOR FROM THE MEDIA.

I don't know why any democrat would say they are shocked at these photos because it has been the democrats which have taught and encouraged this type of behavior in America and its schools.Inholf is right, these photos are nothing and besides,WHO CARES?

It really got to me today when I heard Pelosi say something about how this goes right to the character of those at the top, referring to Bush and Rumsfeld.

I couldn't actually believe she said that with a straight face, after hearing all through the da** 90s that character doesn't matter.

(I think it was Pelosi who said it, though the libs all sound the same to me now -- it might have been that Kerry spokeswoman now that I think about it.)

A little off the subject, but what a great editorial cartoon - not only in content, but style. I love that '30's "Smokey Stover" style of art!

The way the Senators are reacting, you would think they just witnessed a partial birth abortion.

The hysterical and over the top dramatics, especially from the Democrats, is purely political.

The Democrats are so loathesome, they want the children of America to see sexually explicit photos over their Fruit Loops, when Mommy and Daddy open the morning newpaper .
Somehow they think this helps John Kerry.

From the WaPo article :

"Although it often was difficult to determine what was happening in the photos and videos..."

Bill Nelson of Florida was one of the most excited and breathless Senators to give his review of the photos.
He said "You could not say that there was actually the act of sodomy, but IT APPEARS that that MAY BE the preparation for it."

"Nelson and other lawmakers said they saw NO EVIDENCE OF RAPE or any sexual activity between an American and an Iraqi, although several people reported images of troops having sex with each other. "

"Rep. David E. Price (D-N.C.) said there were images of male Iraqi detainees masturbating, APPARENTLY at the orders of U.S. guards."

This is my personal favorite :

"A House member "shouted out, 'What is this all about?' " but Price said Pentagon officials showing the videos had no answer."

Other media is reporting a photo of an Iraqi " sodomizing himself with a banana " which caused the same sex marriage crowd to get light headed.

Amazing how many times people opposed to Sen Inhofe's comments are new to FR! Go back where you came from -- obviously you are not a conservative!

You obviously didn't read what he has had to say because he did think the guards should be punished; however, he thinks the outrage and Kerry using this for fundraising is not right and is totally outraged at the actions of the RATs and media to blow this totally out of proportion.

Liberals do have a tough time reading and comprehending when someone makes sense!

The truth is winning out once again because a Senator spoke out! Wish we had more in Congress that would be willing to speak the TRUTH!

Good point. This is why I don't like McCain, Specter, and all those RINOs. They are nothing but a bunch of Rats ass kissers. How disgusting!

I thought Pelosi was from San Francisco. The photos can't be all that shocking considering what goes on in parks and at demonstrations and parades.
