Globe caught with pants down: Paper duped into running porn photos
By Herald staff
Thursday, May 13, 2004
The Boston Globe was reeling yesterday after graphic photos of alleged sexual abuse of Iraqi women by U.S. soldiers turned out to be staged shots from a hardcore porn Web site.
``This photo should not have appeared in the Globe,'' editor Martin Baron said in a statement. ``First, images portrayed in the photo were overly graphic. Second, as the story clearly pointed out, those images were never authenticated as photos of prisoner abuse. There was a lapse in judgment and procedures, and we apologize for it.''
The ``lapse'' came after City Councilor Chuck Turner and perennial pot-stirrer Sadiki Kambon called a press conference in the wake of the Abu Ghraib prison scandal to display more purported abuse photos. Turner claimed they came from ``a very legitimate person'' but admitted they hadn't been authenticated. Kambon said he got them from a representative of the Nation of Islam. Neither Turner nor Kambon returned calls. (snip)

Spoken like a true denizen of the Merrimack Valley. Damn straight. But I hate it when people figure we're all a-holes here in the Gay State because of Kid Chappaquiddick.

Yup, it grinds me too. I've lived in Maine for the last seven years, but I'm a Boston native and graduated HS in little ol' Haverhill.

Just teasin' ya. Being from Andover beats the hell out of being from Lawrence, eh?

I live in Massachusetts, and believe me, some of us have a brain.
Howie Carr talked about this Boston Jihad-Globe debacle for four hours yesterday. He read two of my e:mails on the air. I'm not comfortable calling in.
Howie made a lot of good points. He drove home the point that on the day after the beheading of an American, the Boston Globe had the chance to make the enemy look bad, yet inside, chose to make American soldiers look terrible based on phony photos.

I wouln't wrap fish in this paper nor would I force caged birds to crap on it..You know I'm with you on that. I have to chuckle (or go stark raving mad) when I think back to the days when it was crammed down my throat that the Globe=good and the Herald=bad. Yeesh.

Interesting how quickly the Partisan Press are printing these photos to change public opinion of the military and the WOT.
Because of retractions, outright fraud as in the UK's Mirror, the Partisan Press is crying "WOLF" too often.

I remember back in '58 when my father switched from the old Herald (the real Boston Herald) to The Globe, because The Herald had become too liberal.

The fake pictures pushed key agendas: the Globe was able to show contempt for the military. Islamist pushed victim status. Gay groups could be assured it wasn't a Maplethropp situation, and dems felt they could stick it to Bush.
The Globe was happy to jump in this fashion pond, then Abu Ghraib chic turned into fakes. Shame on The Globe. More to come...

In my opinion, the mainstream media have made themselves irrelevant. I'll miss 'em.

My memory may be failing me....maybe that's why my parents told me the Herald was a "bad" newspaper....nah, I doubt it. I love them to death but they are Kennedy born and bred liberals (I am the black sheep of the family).
They now read the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel which is a rag akin to the Urinal-Constipation here in Atlanta.

I hate new laws, but Congress needs to pass a law making it a crime to publish photoshopped images relating to troops theatre area of operations.
This could get out of hand in a big way by someone or groups intent of affecting troop morale and support at home for the war.
To: weegee
BTW........isn't the Globe owned by the NY Times.......you know the one where they caught the lawyer making up stories?
