This story was published by the NY Slimes on 17 Jan 2004.

It was ignored by the Rat Pack Senators until they felt they could removed Rummy and hurt GW.

Inquiry Ordered Into Reports of Prisoner Abuse
By ERIC SCHMITT

ASHINGTON, Jan. 16 — The top American commander in Iraq has ordered a criminal investigation into allegations that detainees at the sprawling Abu Ghraib prison outside Baghdad have been abused by American forces, military officials said Friday.

A statement by the military command in Baghdad gave no details about the scope or severity of the incidents, saying only that Lt. Gen. Ricardo S. Sanchez, the senior American officer in Iraq, had directed an inquiry into the latest in a string of reported abuses of prisoners.

"The release of specific information concerning the incidents could hinder the investigation, which is in its early stages," the statement said.

A senior Pentagon official said authorities had been alerted to the possible abuse of detainees in the past few days and were taking the allegations "very seriously."

The American-led occupation is holding thousands of suspected insurgents and criminals at Abu Ghraib, a large prison west of Baghdad that was notorious during the rule of Saddam Hussein for overcrowded cells and torture chambers.

The inquiry ordered by General Sanchez is expected to add fuel to allegations by Amnesty International and many former detainees that the American captors have treated prisoners harshly or abused them in certain cases.

Earlier this month, three Army reservists were discharged for abusing prisoners at Camp Bucca, a detention center near Basra, in southern Iraq. In late December, Brig. Gen. Ennis Whitehead III determined that the three soldiers had kicked and punched prisoners or encouraged others to do so.

Late last year, Lt. Col. Allen B. West, a battalion commander in the Fourth Infantry Division, was allowed to resign from the Army after he fired a pistol near a suspected supporter of insurgents during an interrogation in August to frighten him into giving up information about impending attacks against allied soldiers near Tikrit. Colonel West has defended his actions as necessary to protect his troops.

In addition, the Marine Corps has charged eight Marine reservists in the death of an Iraqi prisoner near Nasiriya last June. Two of the eight marines face charges of negligent homicide, while others face lesser charges, Marine officials said.

Remember when our convoy was attacked, (Lynch), Hackworth got on CNN and said he had heard from "sources" that we lost 250 soldiers!

BTW, if Senators were told of a military investigation of prison problems in Jan, what is Hackworth complaining about?

That the Senators didn't come out and demoralize and endanger our troops in public?

Wonder if this is why Kerry has been virtually silent on this.

Don't hold your breath waiting for repercussions on either side of the aisle. Congress is our royalty, after all.

"Might explain how Hillary said, during the Rumsfeld testimony, that she was aware of problmens for some time"

Yep, I've been wondering since last Friday. I asked Hummby is she had just outted herself. Then the first story abuot Fredericks came out and that pretty much confirmed my suspicions. Oh, I hope she did! What did HILLARY! know, and when did she know it?

...there's a good chance Republicans will be amoung the recipients.

Why shouldn't they be listed if they failed to act? I've said for years that the Congress doesn't care what the military does as long as they do enough of it in their districts and this looks like a classic case-in-point.

The 17 were supposedly notified (by constitutents serving in Iraq) of the prisoner abuse long before the pictures surfaced.

So what? BFD.

Hackworth is a self-promoting jackass.

"Congress is our royalty, after all."

Ditto. There could be a video of 17 democrat Senators including John Kerry engaged in sadistic homoerotic acts with Iraqi prisoners and 40-45% of Americans would still vote Kerry in Nov.

I agree. Hillary made TWO blunders: Bringing up Yee and "The well publicized Report" to which Rummy responded..."You read it? I just got it". (Or something to that effect)

Spousal Abuse Child Abuse Elderly Abuse...and now to add to the newspeak lexicon
Prisoner Abuse...aka Terrorist Abuse....

Bwahahahahaha we don't have the testicular fortitude to even interrogate terrorist anymore...
The islamo facists who gang sodomized our female personnel...got humiliated and paraded around in womens underwear and had some riot dogs bark at them while they were paraded round nekid...

Boo Hoo Hoo...poor Mohammad Attah...got humiliated for slitting stewardess' throats and crashing fully fueled commercial aircraft causing the most horrific deaths of thousands of Americans and police and fire who came to their rescue...

Boo hoo hoo...poor humiliated terrorists...

And now we hang out to dry...those who were following DOD edicts...our war chief runs for cover calling these young troops names...spins the event to even get the regular Army troops to criticize them...

Funny Pres Bush had the guts to not save poor little ole Carla Faye Tucker from execution
and she was a born again Christian in the end who never wanted out of prison but wanted to minister to other inmates...

But now we don't have the guts to even humiliate terrorists, rapists, murdering thugs...in order to extract intel that might save American lives and shorten the war...

I'm glad our forefathers fighting the French n Injuns and the British who tried to enslave us...and freed the slaves...and saved the world from fascism and communism did not have so much trouble with beating the crap out of our enemies..and never ever would have even thought of cringing ot runnning for cover and hanging out to dry their troopies...when some photos were released of the act of beating those enemies..

It's no wonder our enemies have moved onto American soil and enjoy themselves as we self destruct..

imo

Yes. and thanks, Wolfie. Not one Senator who the family claimed they notified came forward on Friday during the hearings, whether there or not, to say that they had already been aware of these pictures. Instead, just feigned surprise and outrage (feigned by the 17 if true).

I'm sure "Leaky" Leahy will have no problem keeping classifed materials secret.

"You say the report was well known. I don't know how you know that. All I know is when it made the public, when somebody took a secret document out of prosecutorial channels and released it to the press, I do not believe it was yet anywhere in the Pentagon. Certainly, I had not been given it or seen it."

The 17 members of Congress will be who the 17 members of Congress were, probably along with the letters sent to them. Hackworth would have little incentive to name names who weren't told, since they could plausibly deny it and ask for proof. His credibility would be shot.

If I had to guess, I'd say that Specter and Santorum would logically be two of them, since Lawson is from PA. And if I were Lawson and wasn't getting a response from my own Republican senators, you can rest assured that I'd start sending letters to those who would have an axe to grind against the President --- Hillary!, Kennedy and KKK Byrd, to name a few. Especially since all 3 are on the Senate Armed Services Committee.
