Moms Unleash Their Anguish, Anger Thousands March to End Gun Violence, Renew Assault Weapons Ban
By Eric Rich and Theola Labbé Washington Post Staff Writers Monday, May 10, 2004; Page B01
Several thousand people, most of them women, gathered on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol yesterday for the largest gun-control demonstration in four years, a loud and calculated effort aimed at forcing President Bush to renew the soon-to-expire federal ban on assault weapons.
The rally lacked the star power, and certainly the numbers, of the first Million Mom March in 2000, when hundreds of thousands of women flooded the Mall on Mother's Day. Organizers this time put the crowd at close to 3,000, a figure that could not be confirmed because police no longer estimate crowd sizes.
But the smaller turnout was expected, organizers said, and sufficient to kick off a nationwide campaign aimed at renewing the ban before it expires Sept. 13. The moms, who have joined with the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, hope public pressure will force Bush to stand by campaign pledges supporting the extension of the popular ban.

For you and I yes but not for someone who has limited abilities .... be they physical or perceived. The simplicity of a break open double barrel is best for a novice with limited knowledge IMHO. With a safe full of Benelli M-1's and SGT Inc 870's dressed I still leave a old double barrel 10 gauge cut down to 18.5 inches out as my defense scattergun augmented by my daily carry handgun(s)........
In my home I dont bluff or scare an intruder with the sound of a racking pump. I do not telegraph my location. If an intruder has got pass my puppies then they have very bad intentions and "fair notice" is out the window as an option.
Just how I plan for a day I hope never comes to my home.....Stay Safe !

Good plan. No substitute for professional and proper training . Even self proclaimed experts could benefit from such initial schooling and refreshers. Experience is always a good thing but bad habits learned will get you in deep doo doo in the darkest of times.
Smart move on your part as the person who has nothing left to learn is cheating themselves IMHO .

GP-100 on the gun rug, SP-101 in her hands (I think) and ruger mags on the wall.
btw I have a Mini 14...so I'm just kidding

Plus, just the chi-chik sound of the pump chambering a round is often all you need to scare away a home invader. And you very well might need to clean your carpets, too.

To get there they, almost to a woman, took their lives in their hands by engaging in the one activity which kills more Americans than any other - automotive transportation.

I'm not sure why the lack of depth perception should be a factor. There's a possibility that a nightime confrontation may not be under the best of lighting conditions.
If you're planning to buy a gun, you are also entering into a new hobby. Don't think of it as a chore, a macho thing or a inconvienance. It's enjoyable and a skill that will be with you for the rest of your life.
Your first choice could be a .22 pistol just to get started. Plan on an afternoon at your local gunshop and ask as many questions as you can. There's a book called The Complete Guide to Guns and Shooting by John Mallory. I highly recommend it.
One word of advice that may help you. Learn to like to shoot first. Use good ear protection and gloves. Don't get talked into something too big at first. As the enjoyment grows, the skill and accuracy will follow.

That might be a good idea if you have kids in the house. It might be a good idea if the chambered round is the wrong load. It's not a good idea if you're trying to have every advantage possible.
