Jobs to preview Mac OS X Tiger at WWDC Keynote

Apple CEO Steve Jobs will preview Mac OS X Tiger at the company's upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco on June 28, 2004. Jobs will give the keynote address for the conference on Monday, June 28, 2004 at 10:00 am.

Each major revision of Mac OS X to date has introduced new technologies and a more refined user experience, in addition to new features. While Apple is mum on specific details of the upcoming preview Apple Vice President of Worldwide Developer Relations, Ron Okamoto told MacCentral on Monday that many of the "To Be Announced" sessions at WWDC would be filled with Mac OS X Tiger technology sessions.

WWDC will host close to 200 technical sessions, including an in-depth look at the latest Mac OS X technologies, hands-on labs with the latest Mac systems, expanded tracks on Enterprise IT and a dedicated track for QuickTime developers and content creators.

Virtual PC 7 on a dual 3Ghz G5.

This is the first peep I've heard of "tiger."

Frankly, I still prefer Jaguar over Panther.

I think the most HP we'll see is a dual 2.5GHz G5. But my guess is that Tiger will be a 64 bit OS.

And I predict that we'll all feel silly referring to Tiger. Especially if Apple drafts Nancy Sinatra as a spokesperson. ;-)

Frankly, I still prefer Jaguar over Panther.

What do you like about Jaguar over Panther?

I find that Panther is about 30% faster than Jaguar and has features such as Expose' that, after using them, I find I don't want to get along without.

Well for what I do, I can't even see a difference between my G4 and G5! Jaguar gives the server name as well as the IP address for networking through the Airport (ip changes depending on what was on and off last). Panther won't run virtual windows, a must with my pocket pc! And I just don't ever have so much going on at the same time for expose' to be of any use to me.

Now I will admit Panther's Finder window is better layed out...

What would you Mac users like to see included?

Easy. I'd like to be able to run xwindows apps off my servers from the terminal instead of a third-party app like X11. It's time Apple got serious about supporting the scientific market it thinks it's courting.

Panther won't run virtual windows, a must with my pocket pc! And I just don't ever have so much going on at the same time for expose' to be of any use to me.

It isn't Panther that prevents Virtual PC Windows to run, its the G5 chip. Virtual PC requires some hardware registers that do not exist in the G5.

Expose' works even within a single program with multiple windows open... but the best use is when you need to get back to your desktop for some purpose. F11 and your there. Once you've completed your desktop work, F11 once more and you are back to where you were in your application.

Got any ideas on the server names? Any one of three boxes could be .02, and unless there's an immediate connection I have to wait to find if I guessed right.

Panther permits multiple logins, selectable from the menu bar. It also has a cool graphics feature: when you select another session, the current session rotates out of sight as one side of a cube, while the new session rotates in as another side of the cube.

My understanding is that IBM removed the PowerPC's pseudo-little-endian load/store instructions that Virtual PC used to emulate Intel's memory organization.

Supposedly, Microsoft was going to rewrite the code to use the G5 vector processor to swizzle the bytes to match Intel's sequence.

I thought so, too. Considering Apple has an additional set of API's re: translucency, I would imagine they sun and apple did a reciprocal agreement. If I'm not mistaken someone from sun did a few minutes at the last Apple to-do.
They may be going with simultaneous releases.
