The irony, Mr. Lawson said, is that the public spectacle might have been avoided if the military and the federal government had been responsive to his claims that his nephew was simply following orders. That argument didn't work for the nazis, either. There's other ways to go about this. He could have e-mailed his superiors, bcc'd his dad, and stored the original on a disk just in case his command chucked the e-mail with no action. Or he could have forwarded a paper letter and stashed copies if a cover-up happened later.
The photographs have now turned soldiers like Mr. Lawson's nephew, Staff Sgt. Ivan Frederick, and Pfc. Lynndie R. England into graphic symbols of military abuse.
This dumbass had visions of being another Erin Brockovich and all he's getting for his trouble is a prison sentence for his son. There's a few ways to do this right. Running to a disgruntled ex-officer with friends at CBS isn't one of them. His story that nobody in Congress or the military was interested even though he had pictures in his possession is a straight-up lie. All he had to do is show them pics and threaten to go to the press. He would have had their attention like you can't believe. The only thing this guy was interested in was fame and money on the talk-show circuit and all he got was a prison sentence for his son.
When the smoke clears, the photos that Lawson sent home for daddy to give to CBS probably wasn't done out of outrage over hazing terrorists that have killed people in unspeakable ways. He's probably angry at his reserve unit being activated and deployed to Iraq. Instead of being in college drinking beer and getting laid, he's in Iraq being expected to do his job. Maybe he should have considered signing up more carefully.

Ratner inadvertently let us know the DNC agenda today by saying they don't want Rumsfeld to go because then it would be over and he'd be the fall guy. They clearly want Bush to be the fall guy. Isn't going to happen.

Further, IMO most reservists are a nothing more than 'free money' public educational system leaches. They could care less about chain of command and following orders. It's little wonder the Iraq POW camps make M*A*S*H look hardcore. That's an awful big brush you're painting with, and in weilding it, you've managed to show your a$$.

I think it is less than 50. We haven't heard about but one contractor, no MI yet, investigation started, or CIA(were they there?) The perps in the pictures are all blaming intelligence giving them orders to soften up the prisoners for interrogation.
The commander said she never went in that part of the prison, intelligence was in charge. It's not the picture posers' fault, it's not the contractors' fault ,or the Commander's fault so we have to find out if anyone had responsibility for anything/sarcasm

I don't think any of these troops should be charged with anything. They are as guilty as Ollie North. Find their superiors who told them to do this and charge them. I'm really mad at Bush for scapegoating the troops. It's cowardly. He should be pointing his finger at their supervisors. These people were told to do a job and Bush is mad at them for doing it instead of being mad at the people who told them to do the job-- like Ted Kennedy and Kerry during Iran Contra. I hope these soldiers rat out every superior involved and take on Bush on this. I'd support them. Troops are told to do bad things all the time in war. You don't blame the troops for doing what they're told.

General Schoomaker gave Senator Chambliss a severe admonition yesterday when he percieved Saxby inferred that the problem at the prison was endemic to a Guard/Reserve unit. He made it clear that the Regular, Guard and Reserve units have the same level of expectations in terms of training, discipline and excellence ... and if that particular unit had some command or system failure it would be identified and fixed.
He's a good Army Chief. I like the Acting Secretary too. He's a retired Colonel with a Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Is the reason this guy can no longer live in his country because his people may treat him worse than what we've seen in these photos? Who's the barbarian here?

You forgot the 3rd, the one who stays groomed and is proud of his service and helps out publically in the VFW or American Legion.
Or, leads Freeps in support of the troops! :)

"
Mr. Lawson said he sent letters to 17 members of Congress about the case earlier this year, with virtually no response, and that he ultimately contacted Mr. Hackworth's Web site out of frustration, "
That is ~weird~...
