He also declared his personal conflict with Catholic teaching: "Last year, when I was told I couldn't remarry in a Catholic church because I was divorced, I found it difficult to accept. I'm still not sure what my sin was." In a March 1997 column, Adubato criticized abortion advocates for lying about partial-birth abortion, but wrote, "Maybe the worst part about this conspiracy is that it undermines the mission of the pro-choice movement." He argued that advocates should have said, "It doesn't matter how gruesome the procedure is or whether the reasons for it are medical or elective. A woman's right to a safe, legal abortion must be preserved."

According to Our Sunday Visitor, Prejean criticized the "loophole" in Pope John Paul II's encyclical Evangelium Vitae, in which he allows for the death penalty "in cases of absolute necessity" and requires individuals to make their own prudential judgment according to their conscience. The newspaper also reported that Prejean opposed abortion but argued that poor women without emotional support have little "choice" to make the right decision. "I think for us to really answer the abortion question so that women don't have them, we really have to look seriously at the whole thing of birth control, family planning and not having unwanted pregnancies,"
Prejean said.

Hellwig sympathetically characterized many of the advocates as "personally against abortion but [they] have hesitation about legislation that they think cannot be enforced in a pluralistic society. They have difficulty balancing the rights and the autonomy of a woman against the rights of a fetus."

Dear "Catholic Higher Education Alert" Subscriber:
It's been too long since our last Alert, and as the academic year comes to a close, we have too many items for a single issue! This will be a two-part Alert, the second part to come Monday.
For this issue, two very important topics:
1) As you may already have seen in media reports, Cardinal Newman Society has released its new report on Culture of Death activity at Catholic colleges. This report is a clarion call for reform. We urge you to
distribute this report far and wide!
2) It's commencement season, and once again Catholic colleges are inviting inappropriate speakers and honorees. URGENT: Please share your concern with the college presidents. A few of the ceremonies are this weekend!
If as many of us question these commencement speakers as protested "the Vagina Monologues," we're going to have a major impact. Thank you for playing such an important role! But please, if you can spare anything,
also help us to pay for all this activity with a donation. Gifts usually come slowly during the summer months, and we have a lot to accomplish even while our funds dwindle.
God bless you!

SPECIAL REPORT: CULTURE OF DEATH AT CATHOLIC COLLEGES
Cardinal Newman Society has issued a shocking new report on scandals at U.S. Catholic colleges and universities that is certain to reignite concerns about the colleges' religious character.
The 56-page report, "The Culture of Death on Catholic Campuses: A Five-Year Review," documents inroads made by advocates of abortion, contraception, premarital sexual activity, and physician-assisted suicide onto Catholic college campuses since 1999. It is the most extensive evidence of problems in Catholic higher education ever compiled in a single source-and yet it only scratches the surface, relying primarily on media reports and college websites.
"'Pro-choice' is no choice for a Catholic institution, which by its Catholic mission must be courageously pro-life," said Erin Butcher, lead researcher and co-author of the report. "Cardinal Newman Society has responded to scandal after scandal on Catholic campuses, but many Catholics still fail to appreciate the scope of the problem."
The report, which can be downloaded free of charge at www.cardinalnewmansociety.org, identifies the problems and suggests solutions to ensure that Catholic colleges uphold their Catholic, pro-life mission. Highlights include:
- Pro-abortion presidential candidates at Catholic colleges. In January, St. Anselm College (N.H.) hosted seven pro-abortion candidates for their final debate before New Hampshire's Democratic primary. Other campaign appearances have included John Kerry at Georgetown in January 2003, Dennis Kucinich at Sacred Heart University last June, Howard Dean at St. Anselm last September and at Georgetown last October, Dick Gephardt's daughter at Boston College last November, Gephardt and Kerry at Clarke College (Iowa) in January, Wesley Clark at Rivier College (N.H.) in January, and Kerry at Georgetown again in April.
- Nearly 200 instances of campus speakers and honorees who have been public advocates of abortion or otherwise contributors to the "Culture of Death". These include at least 17 visits and lectures by President Bill Clinton at Georgetown University, researchers engaged in human cloning and embryonic cell research at Assumption College and the College of the Holy Cross, NARAL Pro-Choice America president Kate Michelman at Boston College law school, radical feminist Gloria Steinem at Fairfield University, pornographer Larry Flynt at Georgetown University, and National Organization for Women (NOW) president Kim Gandy at Loyola University of New Orleans.
- "Emergency contraception," an abortifacient, provided to students by the College of Santa Fe and Rockhurst University.
- College officials and faculty with ties to pro-abortion and pro-euthanasia organizations, including a Boston College law professor on the board of directors of the Death With Dignity National Center; a Georgetown University philosophy professor on the board of directors of the Compassion in Dying Federation, and two Georgetown University women's studies professors who are also employees of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
- Pro-abortion politicians serving as college officials and faculty, including Carol Moseley Braun teaching management at DePaul University, Geraldine Ferraro on the Fordham University law school Board of Visitors
and teaching public policy at Georgetown University, and Leon Panetta teaching political science and on the Board of Trustees and law school Board of Visitors at Santa Clara University.
- Pro-abortion student clubs including the Reproductive Choice Coalition at Boston College law school, H*yas for Choice at Georgetown University, Georgetown Students for Choice at Georgetown law school, and a NOW chapter at St. Ambrose University.
- Internships and service opportunities offered by Catholic colleges, including service as a Planned Parenthood "clinic escort" promoted by Nazareth College's campus ministry and internships with Planned Parenthood offered by Villanova University.
- Website referrals to pro-abortion organizations as medical or academic resources including Georgetown University links to local abortion clinics, LaSalle University links to NOW and the Feminist Majority Foundation, Loyola University of Chicago links to Planned Parenthood and the Feminist Majority Foundation, Loyola University of New Orleans links to NARAL Pro-Choice America and Planned Parenthood, and Seton Hall University links to the Feminist Majority Foundation and NOW.
- Student newspapers promoting sex and contraception, including sex advice columns titled "Sex and the Univercity" in The Heights at Boston College and "Sex on the Hilltop" in The Hoya at Georgetown University.
ACTION: Please alert all faithful Catholics of this report. The more
faithful Catholics who read it, the greater the impact!

Catholic Colleges Invite Inappropriate Commencement Speakers & Honorees
Cardinal Newman Society, conducting its annual review of commencement speakers and honorees at Catholic colleges, has thus far identified 14 inappropriate invitations, many of them to public abortion-rights advocates.
Pope John Paul II has addressed college scandals with a sharp warning: "Clearly, university centers that do not respect the laws of the Church and the teachings of the magisterium, particularly in the areas of bioethics, cannot be endorsed with the character of a Catholic university." The Vatican's apostolic constitution on Catholic higher
education, Ex Corde Ecclesiae, requires that "any official action or commitment of the University is to be in accord with its Catholic identity."
Only little more than half the nation's 223 Catholic colleges have announced their 2004 speakers and honorees, but already it is obvious that the annual commencement scandals continue. Last year Cardinal Newman Society identified 20 inappropriate commencement speakers at Catholic colleges. One of them, radio personality Paul Harvey, canceled his address at Quincy University (Quincy, Illinois) because of the protest. Three bishops also refused to participate in commencement ceremonies featuring speakers whom Cardinal Newman Society opposed.
Already this year, the University of St. Francis (Fort Wayne, Indiana) withdrew its invitation to former ABC News medical reporter Nancy Snyderman, who was scheduled to give the commencement address on May 1, because of concerns expressed by Fort Wayne-South Bend Bishop John D'Arcy. In a 1997 interview with "Good Morning America," Snyderman appeared to advocate selective abortion for a mother pregnant with septuplets. D'Arcy also recently required a Catholic high school in South Bend to cancel a graduation speech by pro-abortion Gov. Joe Kernan and made a public statement criticizing the University of Notre Dame for its production of the offensive play "The Vagina Monologues."
Faithful Catholics are urged to contact college presidents, express concern about inappropriate commencement speakers and honorees, and ask the presidents to withdraw invitations to these speakers when possible. Please be respectful and polite in all communications. The speakers and honorees protested by Cardinal Newman Society in 2004 include:

" Let me ask another question with some immediate political implications. In working at the UN, you were in close contact for several years with then-Archbishop Renato Martino, who was the Holy See's representative there until this year. Now Cardinal Martino, in his new capacity as president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, has gained new prominence as a highly outspoken critic of US policies. What were your impressions of Cardinal Martino?
Ruse: At the UN, on these issues, there was nobody better than Archbishop Martino was for 14 years. He deserves our praise and our undying thanks. While the Holy Father was the guiding force, the man who did the work at the UN was Archbishop Martino. He was unbending: perfect on these issues. He was the great unsung hero of the pro-life movement at the UN.

Santa Clara University's Law School Dean of Admissions has the title "Dean of Admissions and Diversity Services". They currently reserve 60% of admissions for "under represented minorities in the legal profession. I'll let you guess what these are. White male applicants are being denied admissions in favor of minorities with lower LSATs and poorer GPAs from inferior schools.
