All right.
That does it.
I am going to say it.
EVERYONE who ever went to boot camp was humiliated more than these people were in Baghdad.
And I mean EVERYONE!

I never experienced ANY abuse that was sexually-related in Basic, just physical and mental, BUT, I volunteered to join the Army.
These people in the prison in Iraq not only didn't volunteer, apparently many of them got there merely by being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I DO remember that by the end of the second week of Basic, in June of 1976, we were all thoroughly sick of hearing about "Code of Conduct" and "Geneva Convention". What the training is now I do not know, but I'll guarantee nobody who went through Basic in '76 was confused about how prisoners were to be treated, OR about the fact that, if captured, we might not get the same treatment we were required to give.
Or that one thing had anything to do with the other.

"Even when the enemy commits some act of barbarity, it does not mean that we should become garbage too."
To the extent that prisoners can be made to give up valuable information, they could be captured and interrogated. If you have no means of extracting information, they should never be taken prisoner.
They should be killed instead of captured...

These Iraqis are all going to walk away with a big stack of American bucks. I don't feel a damn bit sorry for them. Not a damn bit.

Agree that this is much ado about not a whole lot. What was done was wrong; those who did it will pay - all the way up the CoC hopefully. What we are seeing are political opportunists using this for anti-Bush partisan attacks.
And yes, Ranger School was much much worse.

My nine weeks in 1960 felt like abuse and when I graduated I felt 10 feet tall and could kick the worlds ass. I found out quickly I wasn't and couldn't but there would never be another day in my life where HONOR did not enter my thinking.
Even though the anti-war scum tried to defeat me, my training and discipline saved the day on more than one occasion. Oh yes I slipped once in awhile, no one is perfect, but by in large that NINE weeks taught me everything I ever needed to know about duty, honor, integrity, GOD, country, morals and LIFE.

Just out of curiousity, did the DIs ever sodomize recruits with chemlights and broomsticks?Highly unlikely. But high school football players did it with pine cones and plunger handles.
Let's try 'em first, THEN hang 'em. There may be a not guilty or two among them.

I went through worse treatment during Fraternity initiation in January 1968. Boot camp in 1969 was a piece of cake compared to that.

Getting pings from folks who monitor Aljazeera chat rooms they have up the ante. Any U.S. serviceman now that is captured will have his eyes gouged out and then castrated.

And they will more than likely lose those jobs as well.

We were treated worse at Boot Camp than these people were.Went thru Parris Island Marine Corps boot camp back in the mid-60's. As a recruit, early on in the training cycle, after a shower and butt naked we were crowded into the center of the squad bay ... "closer girls, closer ... OK maggots sit"! No one had better come out of that pile of naked bodies with an erection ... no one did. Bottom line, without going into further specifics ... Parris Island was brutal ... what these Iraqi prisoners experienced seems a cake walk by comparison.

Not quite the same as being sodomized...btw.... No offense, but in high school, the freshmen were subjected to having athletic cream smeared on their gonads and penises, Atomic Balmed?
Remember that? Or it was put in your jock strap. It was a practical joke, but some kids were quite traumitized by it.
I had it done to me twice! I lived, quite mad, too, but I lived.
My point, this is juvenile stuff what they went through. If this was Saddam that captured them, they would be beaten with cattle prods and had their hands or feet amputated.
And we led them around on a leash.
The Horrors!
Now, I honestly dont think this should be policy for standard treatment, but this is way overblown in importance.
I have been told that at the end of WWII, Eisenhower had to deal with 300,000 German troops they had no food or water or shelter for, and were placed in one large field contained with concertina wire. It rained for 2 days, the mud was awful, no toilets, no running water, MANY germans died in those camps, some say as high as 100,000 from disentary.
We are apologizing to the savages we should be making fear us. I dont think we should wipe out the country, but these people need to fear us. Only then will they respect us.

I just have missed Homo Eroticism Day. Or perhaps some dont consider that as humiliating as others. [smile] Did you ever have to make an EMERGENCY HEAD CALL?
Your penis hanging out of your boxers, screaming like a siren, and waving your flashlight over your head, running around the squadbay until the DI said it was ok to pee?
How about the simple act of using the toilet itself? no walls, just toilets, 15 of them.
PT showers, turn the water on, run through the showers belly to butthole then back into the squadbay to dress for the next class, marching somewhere
Peeing into a trough, 40 guys at once, the mist of urine in the air from all that yellow fluid being expelled. You tasted it, couldn't escape it.
Someone writes something on the letter you received at mail call: 100 for each letter. 100 bends and thrust or pushups or side straddle hops or 100 mountain climbers, whatever.
Seeing your reflection in sweat, from head to toe on the cement floor from the incentive PT you had to do when you stood at attention with a 1/4 inch gap between your heels.

As opposed to shooting them after they surrendered?
And just why are these troops pants pulled down, anyways??
We should ask those bloggers just what is going to be different now than before!
