I'll take that trade. Give our enemies an apology (mere words) and keep Rummy (an important act of loyalty and confidence). Sounds good to me. After all, Clinton apologized for the United States at virtually every stop he made around the world during his eight years. Never seemed to hurt him politically.

Agreed. The President is handling it quite well, I think. I don't think he should have even been annoyed with Rumsfeld - that is the only negative in his handling.

Rush sometimes doesn't know when to fold `em. Then again, he never had to win elections.

I'm so confused now, maybe one of our freepers can get out a map of the middle east, draw lines connecting places mentioned in the Bible containing the letters 'e', 'i', and 'o', and create a picture of the 4 horsemen that will tell us what to do next.

He made this apology publicly to the King of Jordan.

Apparently the Islamic nations are demanding it, as the Chinese did over the spy plane incident.

We, as a country are certainly big and strong enough to utter these words without a sense of humiliation.

If these words help to smooth ruffled feathers, and some compensation to those detainees that were humiliated is deemed necessary, then so be it!

Let's get back to the real problems and leave this issue to run it's coarse and subsequently fall of the radar.

I listened to Biden's diatribe on the Senate floor today. All one had to do was visualize him at a meeting with Kerry, to know that he was making his case for VP. He has all the answers, but always with a caveat. He is just another narcissistic, liberal elitist politician.

President Bush apologizes to Iraqi prisoners and enemy combatants for humiliating them (no longer abusing them) but he won't apologize to Americans and 9/11 families.

The Prez did what he had to do, and defended Rumsfield. Now he will move on. He's not a hand-wringer or second-guesser like Clinton or Carter. Bush makes decisions and plows ahead with them.

Bush said the apology to Abdullah because he's an ally, but Abdullah also represents the moderate Arab populace, which is extremely ticked-off. The Arabs and the Dems will stay ticked off anyway BUT this may help move the Middle East peace process forward again with Abdullah's help.

I was hoping no apology was necessary but the White House obviously have considered its options in the situation and gone ahead. Now that the apology is over, back to winning the war on Terror!

I like Hugh also, but he's also terrible at calling elections. Election Eve 2000, he was part of a panel discussion on KCET (the L.A. PBS station) and predicted that Bush would win California. Then when Bush got trounced, he tried to blame it on the early Florida call by the networks which supposedly led Bush supporters to stay home because "it was all over for Bush once he lost Florida." Bush didn't lose by over 1 million votes in CA because of an early FL call. He probably lost New Mexico, Iowa, and possibly Oregon & some others because of it, but not CA.

It was a screw-up and a big one, but the senators and congresscritters seem to be more upset that they weren't told earlier than anything else, so they're fussing and fulminating (and did I mention they're lovin' that face time?). The Dems now have a sledgehammer to use on the Reps, but what's new? The Arab street hates us, but they hated us before all this, always have, always will. The President is out front with this, and Rummy's been taken to the woodshed for a whuppin. The folks involved will be punished, and this'll blow over in a bit--and then there'll be another minor scandal (repeat above ad nauseum).
