Oxford woman files for governor [NC - Libertarian Party]
The Henderson Dispatch ^ | Cinco de Mayo, 2004 | STAFF REPORTS

OXFORD - Barbara Howe filed to run for governor of North Carolina as a Libertarian Monday.

Howe, a 51-year-old Oxford homemaker, was the Libertarian Party candidate in 2000. She won 80 percent of the vote in that year's first-ever Libertarian gubernatorial primary.

"Republicans and Democrats will offer only more of the same: higher taxes, limited choice in education, overregulation and more corporate welfare," Howe said in a faxed announcement Monday. "The Libertarian philosophy is one that emphasizes individual rights and personal responsibility. As governor, I will respect the rights of every North Carolina citizen.

"Our freedom is precious, but if we keep electing people who want to grow government, we are in danger of letting freedom slip away."

Howe is the chairwoman of the state's Libertarian Party. She lives outside of Oxford with her husband, Tom, and two of their children.

What an extremist lunatic.

My general policy toward so-called 3rd parties:

Never vote for a 3rd party if it will undermine votes for the Repubicans. Only if there is no Republican candidate or if the said candidate has a sufficiently comfortable margin.

That being said, there was a time when the Republican Party was the 3rd party and eventually supplanted the Whigs in the 19th century. I would like for the Libertarian Party to eventually replace the Republicans some day -- the GOP is too wimpy.

Thus, the Libertarian Party should methodically try and win office on the local level until the day comes when it pushes the GOP out of the way. The LP is far more committed to the fundamental principles of freedom.

I am a Republican for now, however. I am pursuing a concurrent alternative strategy of Libertarianizing the Republican Party, so that the Buchananites and Rockefeller moderates will be pushed away or converted to advocating for freedom.

Did you forget your "< /sarcasm" tag? Or have you popped in from somewhere else?

I thought the sarcasm was self-evident.

But the Libertarians have had thirty-something years to make an impact and they still have not found a way to stop the nuts from subverting their movement.

Perhaps we should just focus on repairing the Republican Party, instead. It would probably take less energy.

We have to label sarcasm, since text cannot convey tone of voice or facial expressions. The FR tradition is to use the " < /sarcasm " tag or a winking emoticon.

Especially when considering the general lunatic antics and beliefs of the average moral-liberal L.P. standard-bearers.

Typically Libertarian B.S.

My favored candidate, at least, supports LOWER taxes and OPPOSES corporate welfare. That's Bill Cobey, and he's a much better conservative than some damn liberaltarian who opposes the death penalty but doesn't seem to care about abortion; she's rather focus on legalizing pot.

Sounds like a good man. Did he win his primary? If not and the primary campaign's still going on, how's he doing?

It's not until July. He's somewhere in the top two or three -- hard to say who's in front with how much momentum.

Watch out, the GOP cheerleaders will start calling you names.

I had a long e-mail exchange with Barbara Howe in 2000. It was very disappointing. She came off as nothing but another pol. She would never give me straight answers on things like abortion and her stand on legalizing drugs. She also didn't have any concrete ideas on how to deal with the NC legislature, something for which a third-party governor better be well prepared. She seems to have the attitude that the cantakerous old farts in the NCGA would magically see the light and go along with everything she wanted. Not very realistic.

I keep hoping for a real-life conservative libertarian to come along. One of these days...

Oh, I've heard 'em all, NC... "unwitting tool", "threat to society", "anarchist", "closet liberal"... yadda yadda.

But wait, it gets better! I once was told off by a bed-wettin' Marxist that I was a tool of the GOP! Figure that one out.

I've been told - by a supposed Republican - that my party should be forcibly disbanded and all former members should be forbidden from voting for anyone. Another one opined that we should be watched by the FBI. Talk about "black helicopter" conspiracy nuts...

Takes all kinds, I s'pose.

I've been of the opinion that the Republicans only call for smaller government when Democrats have majority power.
