Albright, Gorbachev criticize war in Iraq

Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeline Albright said late Tuesday that President George W. Bush's administration did not take fighting terrorism seriously enough before the Sept. 11 attacks. Questioned at a student conference about the possibilities the attacks on New York and Washington could have been prevented, Albright said: "That is a very, very hard question."

"(But) there was a sense that when (Bush) came into office (his administration) didn't fully appreciate how much time they had to spend on fighting terrorism," she said.

Albright added that the administration of ex-President Bill Clinton -- in which she served -- had prevented "a number of (terrorist) attempts."

Dedicating much of the conference's question and answer session to criticizing the Bush administration, Albright also said the U.S. invasion of Iraq was badly timed because "we had not finished ... dealing with the situation in Afghanistan."

Asked about prospects of resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Albright said it was unfortunate that Washington "has not been involved in the past few years."

"I believe the United States has to play the role of bringing the parties together," she said.

Also speaking at the conference in the Mexican capital, was former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, who joined in on the criticism of the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

"We don't need preventive wars," he said. "We need preventive diplomacy."

Gorbachev said the "ideology" behind the war was intended to establish "a new empire -- an American empire.

The rest of Maddening Allwrong's speech:
...and a democrat ended the cold war, and a democrat brought down the Berlin wall, and a democrat shut down Col Kaddafi, and a Democrat ended the Viet Nam war, and this one time, in band camp...

"I believe the United States has to play the role of bringing the parties together," she said.

And I believe former secretaries of state have an obligation not to undermine US interests especially in times of war. The partisan politics by the left on this war is truely disgusting.

I keep waiting for someone to trash this stupid incompetant fool. Albright was perhaps the worst Sec of State in last 50 years, and worked for the most corrupt administration in history. Unlike her predicessors she is constantly on TV criticizing her successors. When will the Bush admin strike back at this troll?

Albright. What amazes me is that the damage she while in the clintoon administration was only mildly catastrophic. I'm glad her only job was to get lim'd around to cocktail parties and I'm thankful they didn't allow her to make policy.

Think about it. Who better to be presenting the liberal case against the Iraq War, to help discredit that case? Most folks in the middle and on the right take one look at Maddie and think, "How in the HELL did that woman get to be Secretary of State?"
