NEW YORK - CNBC financial anchor Louis Rukeyser, who's been away on medical leave since last fall, has cancer but has promised a return to his weekly business show.

Rukeyser said he underwent back surgery last fall to relieve persistent pain, but when the pain didn't go away, he went back for a checkup and a low-grade malignancy was discovered.

Rukeyser said his doctors have advised him not to go back to work for several months.

"I thank all of you for your kind thoughts, and as Gen. Douglas MacArthur famously declared as he left the Philippine Islands during World War II, `I shall return,'" he said.

His weekly business report, "Louis Rukeyser's Wall Street," airs Friday nights on the cable channel. CNBC anchors have been filling in for him since his last appearance on Oct. 31.

Rukeyser's show, a longtime staple on PBS before he jumped to CNBC, is also shown on more than 180 public television stations.

I hope he gets better. For decades, he was the most watchable thing on PBS.

A wonderful man with a sardonic wit and impeccable logic. Plus he looks like George Washington. All the best to him.

CNBC financial anchor Louis Rukeyser, who's been away on medical leave since last fall, has cancer...after months and months of his failing to return to the Firday night show, some serious malady such as this seemed more and more probable...I love it that when the big brains at PBS figured he wasn't worth carrying there any longer (probably in part because he came off as sounding too conservative at times) he took his show to CNBC and is doing even better there than before - and I don't think his replacement on PBS is even carried in Philly any more...hope he's back soon.......

"June 27, 2005: The NYSE Salutes Financial Journalist Louis Rukeyser Friends and family of Louis Rukeyser ring The Closing Bell on June 27, 2005."

I hope it is not the case, but my guess is that this does not portend good things for Louis.

Hope he gets well. He's a class act, any time I watched him, I felt he was honestly asking questions and getting serious answers.

A step above the spoon fed pablum most deliver.
