Um, I'm running Windows XP now. Does this affect me at all?

Wasn't TweakUI also independently developed?

I own a computer repair shop - it still kinda amazes me the number of folks still running 98. I even have some ask me to 'downgrade' their windows ME to Win 98 because ME can be so flaky.

I despise Microsoft's cheesy tactics to force people to upgrade to newer operating systems. Especially vile is having to install "fixes" for service packs that open up further problems. I hope this fellow's solution extends the service life of 98 for the sake of the people who can't easily afford upgrading.

I was having this problem this weekend. Drove me nuts.

I'm going to try it, I'll let you know how it works.

XP is OK, but 98 is more controllable and user configurable.

For those willing to take the third-party plunge, Coskun's service pack can be downloaded from here.
Coskun, a widely published freeware developer, did not respond to an e-mail query.

Seems like a good way to back-door some W98SE systems.

Bookmarking for the day (if it happens) when my win98SE desktop works well enough to get me back online.

One of the happiest eras in my computer life came when I abandoned W98 for good for W2K. Good riddance.

Alas! It did not work, still got the memory error on boot.

I'm going ahead with XP on the new machine.

I remember being disappointed when I bought a new m/b capable of installing 1GB of RAM, tried it, and then found out that all M$ 98 could handle was 768 (with some tweaking).

Now there are two 512MB computers running 98SE rather than one running 1GB and XP. :-)

At work I have to have a W98se boot CDR on hand to "fix" the XP machine 'cause XP won't let one directly access the disk (e.g. for using a disk editor).

P.S. DOS runs REALLY fast on a relatively current computer.

I never ran any form of 98 or ME and only ran 95 for a few months before going to NT, 2000, and now on this machine, XP. If you are still running 9x, get XP. You won't regret it, but you might regret keeping 9x.
