SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Gov. Joe Kernan's high school alma mater withdrew a commencement speaking invitation to him because the governor's stance on abortion conflicts with Roman Catholic teachings.
South Bend's St. Joseph High School withdrew the invitation at the direction of Bishop John M. D'Arcy of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, who has direct authority over the school.

St. Joe is the alma mater for both me and my wife, and we've noticed the literature coming from the development office reminding us that Indiana's pro-abort governor was a classmate, as if this should be a source of pride for us. I just wish more Catholic bishops would take as firm a stance as the bishop who stood up to Kernan.

Basically this bishop puts the word of God over money and "prestige"..... thank God that all bishops do the same... like the ones in Massachusetts.... oh!..oooppss... never-mind... those Catholic bishop believe in Abortion, Gay rights, Pedastry, and .... whatever the liberals and National Socialist Democratic Party tell them to believe... cause liberals can always justify their hypocrisy. That's the way the justify "ends justify the means".
Cause if they were forced to tell the truth, they would be seen as the conniving slime that they are.

I don't believe Archbishop O'Malley of Boston supports abortion. He has said that pro-abortion politicians should not present themselves for Communion.
To be fair to Apb. O'Malley, I think it has to be recognized that he is in a more difficult situation than most bishops. He is cleaning up one of the biggest messes in the sexual abuse crisis (a mess he did not create), and has one of the most liberal laities in the U.S.
Would I like him to speak out more strongly? Sure. But I understand why he's going a bit easy to begin with.

Bravo, St. Joe. It is a worthy cause on which to take a stand.

It's about time the Catholic church stood up for what it believes. And not put it's head in the sand when it comes to how the world treats our children.

Why doesn't the Governor just chat with Kerry's Cardinal and get an indulgence. The Cardinal in Boston will look the other way on a pro-abortion stance, marriage vows, probably slavery and child molestation if the politician asking is wealthy enough. Hey, a short 'phone call might get the Governor another honorary doctorate!

Is he a Holy Cross Father? I think ND is like the Jesuit schools - off limits to diocesan bishops (or so they would have us believe). Unfortunately.

Why don't you have a chat with a well-informed Catholic and find out what an "indulgence" is?

Is this "grand standing" too, deacon?

Is this "grand standing" too, deacon? Yes. It's not unlike the invitation made to Nancy Snyderman, medical correspondent to ABC News, by St. Francis College in Indiana.
The brain dead nun president waited until two days before Snyderman was to speak (she was to speak on May 1), then she and D'Arcy trot out to the microphones and "withdraw" the nomination because Snyderman advocated selective abortion in the case of quintuplets, back in 1997.
The thing is, I googled up Snyderman's position in five minutes. Why the goofy nun invited Snyderman in the first place is beyond me, but to wait until TWO DAYS before she was to speak is the height of rudeness.
I hope she and D'Arcy apologized for making it look like Snyderman's fault, when it was actually THEIR fault for inviting her in the first place.
Don't invite these people to speak. Arrogantly withdrawing the invitation days before the event is showboating, if you ask me, when you knew good and well what their position vis-a-vis abortion was in the first place.

You think embarrassing people in public is OK, I guess.
It shows a lack of people skills, something bishops are not known for in the first place.
