Paging PPS Techies...Help!

Posted on 04/30/2004 8:18:14 PM PDT by ErnBatavia

I received the installation CD today for Microsoft Office Powerpoint 2003. Of course, it comes with no written instructions, and I'm rather stumped as to how to proceed further.

Example; I try and import a 'folder' with several pics and I get either none, or just one - during my little test runs.

Any tips from fellow FReepers?...My goal is to be able to take a series of digital pics and snaz them up a bit, and look like a wizard.

I'm failing tonight in the wizard department! It appears I've installed correctly, but now I'm stalled.

Power Points are simply a set of "slides". You can change the background, style/design, etc. of the slide. When you open up PP, you can choose "File" then "New", and start a new slide show. YOu have a choice of plain, of styles you want to use, of layout design, etc. In order to have more than one slide (hence a slide show), you must "insert" "new slide" using the menu at the top. In order to put a picture on a slide, you can either "insert" "picture" "From file" using the menu, OR, you can put one in as the background. That's a bit more complex, and if the picture isn't the right size for the slide, it will skew.

Clear as mud??? LOL!! Hang on and I"ll find you some tutorials.

You want to modify photographs? Powerpoint is NOT the right software package for that job. You should probably use some kind of graphics package instead.

If you want to edit individual photos then power point won't do that. You have to have a separate graphics program to edit individual photos.

It sounds as if you want to create a "slide show."

Open individual photos one at a time and place them in the desired order. Each "slide" appears in the left-hand pane as a number. After assigning photo # 1 to slide # 1 press the enter key and that creates slide # 2. You can then import the next photo into slide # 2.

You can add comments to each slide if you want to do so and to find out how to do that I agree with the previous poster that you read the Help file. Contrary to most Help files, the power point help file actually helps.

Snazzing up pictures in Powerpoint is like filling your car with gas by opening the gas cap and immersing it in a giant pool of gasoline... while smoking.

Get some shareware photo editing software like Paint Shop Pro or even Photoshop Elements. Check out http://www.tucows.com/ for ideas.

I think s/he wants a slideshow...there are a lot of free downloads or shareware on downloads.com that will import. One of my favorite programs is ThumbHTML. Once can creat thumbnails, webpages, and slide shows in just a few minutes.

I have an older version (because I use Flash for this kind of stuff), but mine works thusly:

After doubleclicking on a slide that you want to work with, go to the top menu: Insert > Picture > From File and then search for whatever you want to import

Start the program and press F1.

I guess I'm in big trouble if Servo, chief of the 'duplicate thread' fuzz has shown up!

Seriously folks....many thanks; this'll give me a heads up for tomorrow morning's lesson. (Intent may have been misled - I don't wan't to doctor pics, I just want to make a PPS presentation of some home and family shots)

Exactly how did you obtain the installation CD without the documentation? Did you get it a price that was too good to be true?

SELFISH PIGGY BACK ON THIS THREAD:

My Epson photostylus 895 printer has been hanging--evidently somehow within my computer as a function of using Mozilla. I uninstalled Mozilla.

Have uninstalled printer and reinstalled printer. Still have the problem.

And, IE 6.0 is still hanging loading several sites.

Have used Spybot to remove such and it improved a bit but not wholesale.

Any other suggestions?

Thx n advance!

I'd say it's legit...it was a birthday present from our next door neighbors and friends; all tightly sealed in the original packaging, direct from Best Buy or similar...The secret code ring numbers are there all right, but this stuff just doesn't address such fools as me, regarding get it up and running.

...And these guys have never done anything more illegal than voting Republican (which is getting iffy out here...)!

(Seriously, it's a store-bought program that I've long coveted...now that I have it in hand, I'm once again finding out how "challenged" I am)

Printer hangs or computer hangs?

Uninstall printer software in add/remove programs in control panel. Reboot with the printer unplugged from the computer so that the system can "see" a startup without the printer. Reboot again and install the printer. Reboot again whether or not it says you have to.

Hint: When installing new software usually the first dialogue box says, "It is recommended that you shut down all running programs before installing this software." Not only does that mean shut down Word, for example, if you have it running but it also means shutting down all running apps in the taskbar and systray.....or as they call it in WinXP.....the system notification area. Then you have to do a ctrl-alt-del which brings up the task list. Click on the Applications tab and end task on everything on that list then click the Processes tab and end task on everything that the system will let you end task on except Explorer then start the install of the printer software.

You may want to take the time to go to the following site to learn other little tips, tricks and security issues for Windows.

THANKS TONS.

HAVE BEEN HAVING FITS ALSO trying to remove the last few bits (dll's) of STUFFIT.

Complains that ACCESS DENIED. I go to the folder properties and remove the check on the read only box and I still get access denied.

So, STILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL, WHENEVER Explorer looks for a new page, a stuffit window pops up asking if I want to use it to expand or save etc. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Any suggestions on that one?

I've tried the Windows uninstall. Am now seeing if I can get Norton Clean Sweep to help.

If I can find a way to get it to look at it!

Cool, thanks for pointing out "download.com" (I forgot about that one!) For plain slideshow stuff (and a log more) I remember "ACDsee" was quite good too. I've been out of the PC world for a few years, so YMMV. :)

Boot up in Safe Mode and uninstall and/or delete. Get into Safe Mode by continually pressing the F8 key when you turn your computer on. You'll get a Boot Menu. Use the up - down arrow keys to navigate to the Safe Mode selection and press the enter key. You'll get a screen asking if you're SURE you want to be in Safe Mode. Click Yes. Uninstall or delete whatever then reboot normally.
