the old walmart excuse, it couldn't be because winn dixie stores compared to publix/albertson/supercenters are garbage in comparison, their card saving program is the worst and its just easier and nicer to shop elsewhere.

People still have to buy "stuff", and will shop elsewhere with the ex-employees attending them and the net change is likely "0".

The Winn-Dixie by my apartment is a confusing place. They closed down sometime in early 2002. They re-opened, after some remodeling, late in 2003. I've heard they were paying rent on the store even in the time they were closed. Sounds like poor management.

Walmart is competitive with much of their pricing, but where I am, their superstore grocery prices are significantly higher than some of their competitors.

I think they did the same when they moved to a new location and kept paying rent on the old place so another store wouldn't move in, of course Publix brought the shopping center across the way and rebuilt it so the move ended up costing them.

Consumers can lower their grocery bills by about 20 percent when they shop at Wal-MartHow dare they want lower prices. Don't they know the harm they're doing to higher-price stores?

The Winn Dixie near me isn't hiring anyone, altho there's enough business to warrant it. It's a shame stores would rather CLOSE than COMPETE and lower prices. Many would rather shop their closest supermarket. Wal-Mart tends to build on the outskirts of most cities and suburbs, at least down here. Winn Dixie is more convenient. Why not lower prices and keep the neighborhood shopper instead of folding and leaving no choice but Wal-Mart?

I think some of the smaller Publix and Albertsons are worse than Winn Dixie now. The bigger, newer stores are a different story.

Thanks for posting. I live in the Philly Suburbs and My grocery shopping is as follows.
Costco - Consumer Non-durables (TP, Detergent, Shampoo), Bulk food (Coffee, Hotdogs). Freezer fillers (Roasts, chicken parts)
Giant - Deli, Fresh meat, snacks, ice cream.
Everyone else - Only the very best of their advertised specials.
Giant is just over a mile away and it has the best everyday prices of the supermarkets here.

You mean actually COMPETE ? Heck no, not when it's easier to cut and run and show a temporary profit, before you move on to the next corporation looking for a blood-letting.

It's all Bush's fault for encouraging outsourcing!
Actually, I'm surprised this didn't happen years ago. W-D is terrible here in Central Florida. They can open a brand new "Marketplace" Superstore and in a week have it looking like a store that should be closed for disinfection!

Actually, I'm surprised this didn't happen years ago.Ditto. The local WD store is always the last choice for us. The service stinks - express lane? What's that? The store interior is dingy even after a remodel a couple of years ago.
Our shopping order is: Military Commissary, Wal Mart, Kroger, Winn Dixie. Side trips to a health food store and SAM's.
