The bizarre incident began at about 10 a.m. on April 24, when a school official called Esteban Palafox, 34, at his store, Mexico Azteca II in Tomp- kinsville, telling him that 10-year-old Esteban Jr. had not shown up for classes for three days, the elder Palafox told The Post. Enraged, Palafox began searching for his son and found him inside their apartment above the deli at 7 Corson Ave.

After he shouted at the boy, Palafox went down to the deli to retrieve the dried beef, cops said.

He then returned to his apartment and repeatedly whacked the boy's thigh with the jerky, leaving bruises, according to police.

"I want to live good. I want my child to live good too," Palafox said.

He insisted the punishment fit the crime.

Asked if he regretted turning the beef jerky on his son, he was emphatic: "No! No! No! No! No!"

The ex-wife turned him in to the police because he left bruises on the kid's thigh. Way to go ma, the husband raises the beef, but you're trying to raise a weinie. The kid'll end up a little jerky....

Sorry - but any time you leave bruises - that's abuse.

There's nothing wrong with a firm swat on the butt to get their attention - this goes way beyond that.

I see your point. I think the ex wife played it up for all it's worth. My guess is that he pulls this crap and gets away with it with the mom though.

Some people just bruise easy. I never know where most of mine come from.

This person almost certainly doesn't "bruise easily"; people who bruise easily tend to be very fair-skinned.

Yes, and black people don't sunburn either. (eye roll)

Really, how much real damage do you think a Slim Jim is going to do?

Having our daughter idolize Christina Aguilera and our sons becoming P. Diddy and both playing 10 hours of death computer games...getting fat, lazy and stupid with no self control...

That is abuse!

You have a point but I'm very suspicious of the ex-wife and ten year old brats wanting to get out of school. Lots of room for *embellishment*.

Palafox was arrested Tuesday and charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon - the beef jerky - and endangering the welfare of a child.

Hmmm.. Well, I can say that I don't bruise easily at all, and you'd probably have to attach a rock to the end of the Slim Jim to bruise me.. =)

That being said, it doesn't say Slim Jim, but rather beef jerky. You could cause a good bit of pain with some packaged beef jerkies I've seen - especially one of those foot & a half long ones. It'd be about like whipping the kid (literally)...

It'd be like whipping the kid with a Charleston Chew. Broad surface wrapped in plastic.

Major overreaction, IMO. My mother used to have to go outside and cut her own switch, come punishment-time...and no, I don't think Grandmommy should have been arrested.

Well, the question then is whether the punishment caused the bruising. If it did, I would say it was excessive. If it did not, I would say it was a weird and somewhat humorous choice of disciplinary methods, but not excessive. If the kid "bruises easily" then I don't know; I guess it depends on what the definition of "easily" is. Personally, I think people that "bruise easily" are usually just more klutzy than the average. No offense!! :p

I was switched too once in a very long while - it never left any marks - and overall I was about as disciplined as a boy gets. It wasn't till I hit 17 that it all went to hell in a handcart.. =)
