SMITHFIELD, N.C. -- A man wanted on a murder charge in Mexico and living in the United States for several [3] years was arrested on Tuesday, authorities said. Francisco Avalos-Machado, 24, of Smithfield, also was charged with two counts of possession of a firearm by an illegal alien.

Two men with Avalos-Machado when he was arrested were turned over to the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement under suspicion of being in the country illegally...

[The FBI] said Avalos-Machado had a loaded .25-caliber handgun on him. When agents searched his residence, they found a 9 mm handgun and about 50 rounds of ammunition for a 20-gauge shotgun, a .38 Special and a 9 mm, Zolper said.

Avalos-Machado is one of three men wanted in the death of a woman named Dora Laura Lira-Arguijo... in the Mexican state of Coahuila.

Lira-Arguijo's husband died of alcohol consumption and cancer, Mexican authorities said. But his mother thought he died because Lira-Arguijo put a spell on him and ordered her killing, Ruiz-Arrevalo said. The mother-in-law is in jail in Mexico; the other two men are at large.
